Introducing The New Tudor Pelagos FXD Chrono “Cycling Edition”
With the start of the Giro d’ Italia this weekend, Tudor, which is at the same time sponsor of the race and the Tudor Pro Cycling team, kicks things off with a special edition of the Tudor Pelagos FXD Chrono called “Cycling Edition” which will equip the entire team throughout the tough 21 stages and 3,400 km of the race.
The new Tudor Pelagos FXD Chrono, which is in almost every way similar to the version that debuted almost a year ago under the Alinghi Red Bull Racing banner, comes with some new features, the most obvious being the new fixed 60-minute bezel as well as a different tachymeter rehaut, and the least obvious one that certainly won’t leave many fans in heaven is the reduction of the previous waterproof by half.
But let’s get to the point, the latest Pelagos once again wears a matte carbon case with the same previous dimensions of 43mm in diameter, 14.40mm in thickness and 53mm lug-to-lug distance, immobile bezel, sapphire crystal, fluted crown protected by guards and flanked by two pushers and (unthinkable) 100m of water resistance.
On the black dial, the usual bi-compax layout with two registers is outlined in red materialized in a 45-minute counter at 3 o’clock and a running seconds at 9 o’clock, adding a date window at 6 o’clock. Applied ceramic hour markers that together with the hands are all filled with Super-LumiNova, a chronograph centre seconds hand and even a chapter ring mimics the spin cycling in red.
Its heart continues to be pumped by the Caliber MT5813 automatic movement which is COSC certified, operating at 28,800 Vph and offering up to 70 hours of power reserve.
The watch comes attached to a black fabric strap with hardware made from the same material as the case, arriving as a non-limited edition and priced at CHF 4,850.
Our Opinion
The launch of the new Pelagos is not surprising as it is in line with the path taken by the brand in recent times in different sports. We would even say that this one suffers from being late.
As for the watch, the fixed bezel is easily explainable given the reduction in water resistance, the same cannot be said about that downsize level, leaving the Pelagos family on its knees.
One last word for the dial, it seems more harmonious than the previous edition, not unrelated to the fact that it only comes with two lines of text at 6 o’clock which, together with a smaller colour palette, seems to work better.
