The Ingenieur Goes Green: IWC’s Limited Edition Spotlight
IWC continues to evolve its Ingenieur collection with a new standout model: the Ingenieur Automatic 40 Green, a limited edition of 1,000 pieces that blends technical precision, 1970s-inspired aesthetics, and a unique color scheme. Designed in the spirit of Gérald Genta’s original Ingenieur SL from 1976, this model introduces a bold green dial and gold accents to one of IWC’s most iconic integrated bracelet watches.
A Reimagined Classic
Revived in 2023 with modern proportions and refined finishing, the Ingenieur Automatic 40 retains the key design elements of Genta’s “Jumbo” SL 1832: a 40mm stainless steel case with a notched bezel secured by five functional screws, an integrated H-link bracelet, and a textured grid dial. The case is just 10.8mm thick and water-resistant to 100 meters, with brushed and polished surfaces highlighting its architectural geometry. The bracelet’s center links receive a polished finish to subtly elevate the overall aesthetic.
Inspired by the Big Screen
This particular edition also carries a cinematic connection: the green dial configuration was originally designed as a prop for actor Brad Pitt’s character in the upcoming racing film F1, directed by Joseph Kosinski. The watch seen on-screen—worn by Pitt as fictional driver Sonny Hayes—was based on a vintage Ingenieur SL and has now been translated into this real-world limited edition.
A Dial Full of Character
The light green dial, with its slightly metallic sheen, features IWC’s signature grid pattern made up of alternating horizontal lines and small boxes. The result is a captivating, ever-shifting chequerboard effect that plays beautifully with the light.
Gold-plated hour markers and hands, filled with Super-LumiNova, provide both contrast and readability, while a framed date window sits neatly at 3 o’clock.
Performance Under the Hood
Inside, the watch is powered by the IWC-manufactured calibre 32111, an automatic movement with a pawl winding system, a 4Hz frequency, and a substantial 120-hour (5-day) power reserve. As with the original Ingenieur models, a soft-iron inner case offers protection against magnetic interference—preserving its legacy as a functional engineer’s tool watch.
A solid, screw-down caseback ensures durability, while maintaining the sleek lines and sporting identity of the piece.
A Unique Edition
Limited to 1,000 pieces, the Ingenieur Automatic 40 Green stands out for its bold color combination, heritage-inspired design, and its subtle link to one of 2025’s most anticipated films. Priced at € 14,200, it is both a collector’s piece and a modern tribute to the Ingenieur’s legacy.
First Impressions
At Watches and Wonders, I had the opportunity to see the new IWC models up close. While the Ingenieur 35mm, especially the rose gold version, initially drew my attention with its proportions and elegance—perfect for my smaller wrist—this green dial 40mm edition was a real showstopper. The unusual pairing of soft green with gold accents gives the watch a fresh, refined presence on the wrist. Alongside the 35mm rose gold variant, it’s easily among my favorites from the brand this year.
