Timex Reintroduces The Titanium GMT With Modern Enhancements
The Timex Expedition North GMT is an exciting new release that revisits the popular collaboration between Timex and James Brand from last May but with several updates and modifications. This watch retains the titanium case, now crafted in Grade 2 titanium, giving it a more rugged, angular design with a stealthy aesthetic. The case dimensions remain the same at 41mm in diameter and 11.50mm in thickness, but its angular profile and beadblasted finish make it appear more substantial on the wrist. It also features a 24-hour bidirectional metal bezel, a sapphire crystal, an open case back, and a screw-down crown, while maintaining the same impressive 200m water resistance.
One of the key updates is the black dial, which has undergone a significant redesign. The applied indexes include a large triangle marker at 12 o’clock, with round and lipstick-style markers at the other hour positions. Both the indexes and the baton-shaped hands are filled with white luminescent material, ensuring readability in low light. The seconds and GMT hands now feature lumed rectangular tips, adding to the watch’s modern look. The date window remains positioned near the crown but now includes a matching background for a more seamless appearance. Branding has been updated with “Timex” and “Expedition North” placed at 12 o’clock, while the GMT marking at 6 o’clock is in yellow, matching the tone of the dedicated GMT hand. Below that, the watch’s specifications include “Automatic” and “200m Water Resistant.”
A major change is the movement inside the watch. The new Timex Expedition North GMT now houses the automatic Seiko NH34 movement, which operates at 3 Hz, offering a 41-hour power reserve. While this movement operates at a lower frequency than the previous Myota 9075, it provides a reliable military or office GMT function that tracks time zones efficiently. The shift to the NH34 is a notable difference, as it is not as refined as the Myota, but still ensures dependable performance for everyday use.
In terms of the strap, this new version comes with a black silicone strap with titanium hardware, as opposed to the multiple strap options that were available with the James Brand limited edition. This change is reflected in the watch’s price, making it more accessible at €549, a significant reduction compared to the earlier edition.
Overall, the new Timex Expedition North GMT offers a more contemporary and angular design with modern updates, making it a stylish and functional choice. While the use of Grade 2 titanium and the Seiko NH34 movement may be seen as a step down in terms of robustness and precision compared to the James Brand edition, the watch still delivers strong value, particularly with its lower price point. It’s an attractive option for those looking for a reliable GMT watch with a rugged and contemporary design.
