Urwerk Unveils Limited Edition EMC SR-71: A Watch Crafted From Blackbird Legacy
Urwerk’s EMC (Electro-Mechanical Control) is a hybrid mechanical watch that celebrates its 10th anniversary this year with the limited edition SR-71.
The new EMC SR-71, as the name suggests, is associated with the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird spy plane, which has not been in operation since 1999 but continues to be the fastest plane built to date, reaching a speed of Mach 3.3.
In 1966, the SR-71, just two years after its maiden flight, collided with the refuelling tanker KC-135Q in flight, causing it to crash in Texas. Hence the idea came to watch collector Jason Sarkoyan and aeronautical engineer Dr. Roman Sperl to use part of the fuselage in the design of the new EMC that Urwerk welcomed which now results in this exclusive edition of 10 pieces.
The robust watch comes in a black titanium and steel case measuring 47.55mm wide, 17.58mm thick and 49.57mm long, with the bezel and winding handle made from the aircraft fuselage which is an alloy that combines titanium, steel, aluminium, and vanadium among others, and 30m water resistance.
On the dial, a subdial in the lower right corner that provides the hours and minutes, a running seconds above it in the upper right corner with the tip of the pointer in the shape of the SR-71, a power reserve indicator in the lower left corner and highlighted in the upper left corner is the optical sensor that checks the 4 Hz frequency of the balance wheel against the 16,000,000 Hz electronic oscillator.
Through the sapphire crystal of the rear case, we can observe the In-house UR-EMC hand-wound movement that comes decorated with aviation yellow paint and offers up to 80 hours of power reserve.
The watch is attached to a green NATO strap with Velcro closure that can be purchased for CHF 150,000 plus tax.
