Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle Openface Three Anniversary Limited Editions
Vacheron Constantin celebrates 270 years of uninterrupted watchmaking excellence with three limited-edition Traditionnelle Openface models. These timepieces pay homage to two of the Maison’s historical signatures: openworked dials and retrograde displays.
The first partially openworked Vacheron Constantin timepiece dates back to 1918, a pocket watch with an astronomical calendar. Over the decades, the Maison has continuously refined this aesthetic, seen in the 2002 Reference 47247 and the 2019 Traditionnelle Twin Beat Perpetual Calendar. Similarly, the retrograde display—a signature complication—has been part of Vacheron Constantin’s legacy since 1940, when it appeared on the Reference 3620, also known as ‘Don Pancho.’ The brand revived the retrograde display in 1994 with the Mercator and continued its evolution with the 2000s Reference 47245.
The three new anniversary models blend these defining complications with the classical elegance of the Traditionnelle collection. Crafted in 950 platinum, they feature stepped lugs, fluted casebacks, and slender bezels. The dials showcase traditional watchmaking elements such as a railway-type minutes track, faceted Dauphine hands, and applied gold baton hour-markers.
Exquisite Finishing and Craftsmanship
These limited editions are a testament to Vacheron Constantin’s commitment to exceptional craftsmanship. The openworked dials highlight the intricate mechanics of each watch, allowing an unobstructed view of their movements.
Traditionnelle Perpetual Calendar Retrograde Date Openface: Powered by the new self-winding Calibre 2460 QPR31/270, this model features a perpetual calendar and a retrograde date display. The sapphire discs, set against a deep blue background, enhance the movement’s visual appeal.
Traditionnelle Tourbillon Retrograde Date Openface: Equipped with the self-winding Calibre 2162 R31/270, this timepiece showcases a tourbillon at 6 o’clock, a retrograde date, and a peripheral gold oscillating weight, contributing to its slim 6.35mm profile.
Traditionnelle Complete Calendar Openface: Driven by the Calibre 2460 QCL/270, this watch includes a triple calendar and precision moon-phase display. The openworked dial reveals the 312-component movement, with a blued hand marking the date on the periphery and sapphire discs displaying the day and month.
Further elevating these pieces is the finely hand-guilloché pattern on the dials, inspired by the Maltese cross—a Vacheron Constantin emblem since 1880. This intricate decoration, reminiscent of the 1955 Reference 6068, plays with light and shadow, adding depth to the design.
The exposed movements also highlight the Maison’s meticulous finishing techniques. Each component is chamfered, polished, and rounded by hand, ensuring a harmonious visual balance. The caseback reveals ‘côte unique’ finishing on the bridges, a technique rediscovered in 2021. It took over 500 hours to master this rare decorative style, reflecting Vacheron Constantin’s dedication to preserving traditional craftsmanship.
Completing the ensemble, each watch is paired with a large square-scaled, hand-sewn alligator leather strap, featuring tone-on-tone saddle-stitching and a half Maltese Cross pin buckle—another tribute to the brand’s enduring legacy.
