Grand Seiko Revisits Its Hand-Wound Heritage With The New SBGW325
Grand Seiko is revisiting an important chapter in its modern history with the new Elegance Manual-Winding SBGW325. Created as a limited edition of 600 pieces, the model takes inspiration from the SBGW003 introduced in 2001, particularly its distinctive use of raised Arabic numerals, while combining that historic dial design with the current-generation hand-wound Calibre 9S64.
The result is a relatively restrained Grand Seiko, built around compact proportions, a traditional case profile and a deep indigo-inspired dial. It also provides an interesting link between the early hand-wound 9S models that helped re-establish Grand Seiko and the watches found in the collection today.
A Connection to the SBGW003
The SBGW003 occupies an important position in the modern history of Grand Seiko. Introduced in 2001, it was equipped with the Calibre 9S54, the first hand-wound 9S movement developed during Grand Seiko’s modern revival.
Its significance went beyond the movement, however. The watch adopted a more understated interpretation of Grand Seiko’s design language, with a relatively compact case and traditional dial layout. One of its most recognisable characteristics was the use of prominent raised Arabic numerals.
The new SBGW325 brings that particular detail back into the current collection, while replacing the original movement with the considerably more advanced Calibre 9S64.
A Compact Elegance Case
The SBGW325 uses the same general case architecture found on contemporary models such as the SBGW301 and SBGW305. The stainless-steel case measures 37.30 mm in diameter, with a thickness of 11.70 mm and a lug-to-lug measurement of 44.30 mm.
These dimensions give the watch a distinctly traditional footprint, while the relatively short lug-to-lug distance keeps it compact on the wrist. The case features Grand Seiko’s characteristic combination of polished surfaces and carefully defined transitions, but its overall profile remains considerably more restrained than the brand’s sportier or more aggressively styled models.
A box-shaped sapphire crystal sits above the dial, adding some visual depth while maintaining the vintage-inspired character of the watch.
The caseback is secured by six screws and provides a view of the movement. Water resistance, however, is limited to splash resistance, so the SBGW325 is intended primarily as a dressier everyday watch rather than a model designed for exposure to water.
An Indigo Dial with Arabic Numerals
The dial is the defining element of the SBGW325.
Its deep navy tone takes inspiration from traditional Japanese indigo dyeing, giving the surface a rich blue appearance that changes subtly with the surrounding light. Against this background, Grand Seiko has recreated the prominent applied Arabic numerals associated with the SBGW003.
The numerals are rendered in a silver tone rather than the gold-coloured treatment found on the original model. They provide a strong visual presence without making the dial excessively ornate.
The hour and minute hands are classic Dauphine shapes, also finished in silver, maintaining the traditional Grand Seiko aesthetic. Gold is reserved for selected details, most notably the seconds hand and the applied GS logo, creating a restrained contrast against the predominantly blue and silver composition.
The result is a dial that combines historical references with a contemporary execution rather than attempting to reproduce the SBGW003 literally.
Calibre 9S64 and 72 Hours of Power Reserve
Behind the dial is the Calibre 9S64, Grand Seiko’s modern hand-wound movement and a direct descendant of the architecture introduced with the 9S54.
One of the major developments over the original calibre is its three-day power reserve. The 9S64 can operate for approximately 72 hours when fully wound, compared with the 50-hour reserve of the 9S54.
The movement operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour and has a stated accuracy specification of +5 to -3 seconds per day.
Through the transparent caseback, the movement receives Grand Seiko’s characteristic finishing, including decorative striping and a concave barrel cover. In keeping with the nature of the watch, the movement is not simply hidden behind a solid caseback but becomes part of the overall presentation.
Two Straps Included
Grand Seiko supplies the SBGW325 with two leather straps, allowing the character of the watch to be changed without altering the case.
The first is a hand-dyed blue crocodile strap, designed to complement the indigo dial and create a more cohesive appearance. The second is a light grey cow leather strap, introducing a stronger contrast and giving the watch a more relaxed character.
Both straps use quick-release spring bars, making it possible to switch between them without specialised tools.
Availability and Price
The Grand Seiko Elegance Manual-Winding SBGW325 is limited to 600 pieces worldwide.
It will be available from October 2026 through Grand Seiko Boutiques, with a European retail price of € 5,700.
Our Opinion
There is something particularly appealing about the SBGW325 precisely because Grand Seiko has resisted the temptation to make it complicated. The 37.30 mm case, hand-wound movement and relatively quiet dial create the kind of watch that can easily be overlooked in a collection known for more elaborate finishing, textured dials and technically impressive movements. For us, that restraint is part of its appeal.
The dimensions are also important. At 37.30 mm with a 44.30 mm lug-to-lug measurement, the SBGW325 sits firmly in the proportions we tend to appreciate most at MR STATELESS. It has enough presence to remain elegant on the wrist without becoming a statement piece simply because of its size. The traditional case shape reinforces that feeling.
The Calibre 9S64 is perhaps the less visible but equally important part of the story. It connects the SBGW325 directly to the SBGW003 and the beginning of Grand Seiko’s modern hand-wound 9S era, while its 72-hour power reserve makes it a considerably more practical proposition than the original 9S54.
For us, the SBGW325 works best when viewed as a watch about proportions, details and heritage rather than specifications alone. It doesn’t try to dominate the wrist or showcase everything Grand Seiko can do. Instead, it takes one of the more discreet chapters of the brand’s recent history and gives it a contemporary execution. That makes the SBGW325 one of those Grand Seiko models where the appeal is likely to become more apparent the longer you look at it.
