Grand Seiko Updates Its Iconic GMT With The New “Snowdrop” And “Moondrop” Editions
Grand Seiko introduces two new additions to its Elegance Collection — the SBGM255 “Snowdrop” and SBGM257 “Moondrop” — refined interpretations of the beloved GMT design that blend classic proportions with newly textured dials inspired by nature’s quiet beauty.
A Familiar Silhouette, Enhanced with Subtle Refinement
Both new models retain the graceful 39.50 mm stainless steel case shared with the well-known SBGM221, defined by soft contours and meticulous Zaratsu polishing. The rounded case sides, curved lugs, and polished bezel create a smooth, understated profile that emphasizes the brand’s distinctive Grammar of Design philosophy in a more dress-oriented form.

A box-shaped sapphire crystal enhances the watch’s vintage charm, while the lug-to-lug length of 46.90 mm ensures comfort on most wrists. The case thickness remains at 14 mm — consistent with the earlier model — and offers a water resistance of 30 meters. Each timepiece pairs elegantly with a high-quality crocodile leather strap secured by a three-fold clasp with push-button release.
Dial Craftsmanship: Snowdrop and Moondrop
The defining feature of these new GMTs lies in their dials, where Grand Seiko’s artistry takes center stage. Both dials feature a geometric spiral texture, interrupted only by the recessed 24-hour scale — a modern pattern that plays with light and depth.

The SBGM255 “Snowdrop” evokes the stillness of winter with a pure white dial complemented by blue accents. Its tempered blue GMT hand and matching 24-hour scale stand out clearly against the crisp white background, while the polished, multi-faceted hands and applied hour markers reflect light with remarkable precision. The result is a dial that feels serene yet dynamic, capturing the quiet clarity of snow under morning sunlight.

The SBGM257 “Moondrop”, on the other hand, takes a deeper and more contemplative approach. Inspired by the soft glow of moonlight on an autumn night, it features a rich navy blue dial adorned with golden highlights on the GMT hand and the 24-hour scale. The brushed finish on the hands and indexes introduces subtle contrast and ensures excellent legibility, while the overall tone of the dial conveys warmth and depth.
In both editions, the date window positioned at 3 o’clock — complete with a finely executed metallic frame — adds functionality without disturbing the visual balance.
First Impressions in Madrid
We had the privilege of seeing both models in person this past September in Madrid, during a presentation led by Frédéric Bondoux, President of Grand Seiko Europe. Experiencing them up close confirmed what sets these pieces apart within the collection — their new stamped dials, which bring a fresh texture and depth not previously seen in the Elegance GMT line.

Even after fifteen years since the original SBGM221 made its debut, we continue to believe that Grand Seiko’s Elegance GMT remains one of the most interesting GMT watches on the market — timeless in design, precise in mechanics, and uniquely expressive in craftsmanship.
Mechanical Precision: The Calibre 9S66
Inside each model beats the In-house Calibre 9S66, an automatic GMT movement that embodies Grand Seiko’s mechanical expertise. Operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz), the movement offers a 72-hour power reserve and a daily accuracy rating of +5 to -3 seconds.

As a true traveller’s GMT, the local hour hand can be adjusted independently in one-hour increments without interrupting the running seconds — an essential feature for frequent travelers. The beautifully finished movement is visible through the sapphire caseback, revealing fine details such as perlage and striping characteristic of Grand Seiko craftsmanship.
Availability and Price
The Grand Seiko Elegance GMT SBGM255 Snowdrop and SBGM257 Moondrop will join the permanent collection in December 2025, each priced at € 5,200, the same as the existing SBGM221.
With their refined proportions, detailed stamped dials, and high-precision movement, these models reaffirm Grand Seiko’s ability to combine traditional elegance with subtle innovation, ensuring their place among the most distinctive GMTs available today.
