Exploring The Grand Seiko SBGZ011 And Its Ultra-Thin Spring Drive Movement
The new Grand Seiko Masterpiece Spring Drive SBGZ011 Mystic Waterfall stands as a refined expression of the brand’s dedication to craftsmanship, blending traditional Japanese artistry with advanced watchmaking technology. Produced by the renowned Grand Seiko Micro Artist Studio in Shiojiri, this limited-edition model highlights both mechanical innovation and meticulous hand-finishing.
A case rooted in iconic design
The watch is built around the historic Grand Seiko 44GS case, a cornerstone of the brand’s design language since 1967. Measuring 40 mm in diameter and just 9.60 mm thick, the platinum case maintains elegant proportions while offering a strong visual presence.

What sets this execution apart is the hand-engraved surface. The case is decorated with fine indentations that evoke the movement of flowing water, creating a tactile and visual depth rarely seen in modern watchmaking. The signature Zaratsu polishing enhances the contrast, particularly along the inner lug surfaces, where sharp reflections meet the textured engraving.
Dial inspired by natural motion
The dial continues the same theme, drawing inspiration from the Tateshina Waterfall. Its surface is intricately hand-engraved to mimic the gentle flow of cascading water, giving it a dynamic appearance as light shifts across it.

Complementing this textured backdrop are precisely crafted elements in 14k white gold. The hour markers are diamond-cut for maximum brilliance, while the hour and minute hands are finished to a high polish. Subtle details, such as the hand-curved tips of the minute and seconds hands, reinforce the level of artisanal attention applied throughout.
Ultra-slim Spring Drive precision
At the heart of the SBGZ011 is the manual-winding Grand Seiko Calibre 9R02, one of the most refined movements developed by the Micro Artist Studio. With a thickness of only 4 mm, it is currently the slimmest Spring Drive calibre, allowing for the watch’s elegant profile.

The movement combines traditional mechanical energy with quartz regulation, delivering exceptional accuracy alongside the smooth, gliding seconds hand characteristic of Spring Drive technology. A dual mainspring system, paired with a torque-return mechanism, provides an impressive 84-hour power reserve, visible via an indicator on the caseback.
Finishing is executed to haute horlogerie standards: hand-polished bevels, fine linear brushing, and carefully decorated bridges. A bellflower motif—symbolic of Shiojiri—is integrated into the movement design, alongside a gold “Micro Artist” plaque, underscoring its exclusivity.
Strap and availability
The watch is fitted with a black crocodile leather strap secured by a platinum triple-folding clasp with push-button release. It also comes with an additional Kyoto leather strap, designed with subtle metallic accents that echo the shimmer of water.

Limited to just 50 pieces, the SBGZ011 will be available exclusively through Grand Seiko boutiques starting in July 2026, with a retail price of € 86,000.
