MB&F Strips Down The Machine With The Elegant SP One
MB&F has introduced the Special Project One (SP One), marking a significant milestone as the brand’s most compact and streamlined creation to date. With a 38 mm case and a minimalist time-only display, the SP One reinterprets the concept of a dress watch through the distinctive lens of MB&F’s design language.
A Compact Form With Architectural Depth
The SP One is offered in two variants: 18k 5N red gold and 950 platinum. Measuring 38 mm in diameter and 12 mm thick, the case retains a sculptural silhouette that contrasts clean lines with subtle complexity. The lugs are detached from the caseband, visually suspending the central case between four anchor points — a nod to MB&F’s kinetic approach to traditional form.

The crown, placed unconventionally at 10 o’clock, ensures uninterrupted symmetry and supports the clean aesthetic of the piece. Both the front and back are fitted with sapphire crystals treated with anti-reflective coatings.
Movement as Dial: A Visual Centerpiece
At the heart of the SP One is a new in-house manually wound movement developed exclusively for this release with a 3-day power reserve. The architecture of the movement was designed to be visible from the front, forming a central visual structure built around three circular elements: the barrel, the balance wheel, and the time display itself.

These elements are interconnected via a central three-spoke bridge, giving the illusion of floating components suspended in space. Most of the traditional movement parts are concealed beneath these visible elements, allowing the focus to remain on the sculptural presentation.
Elevated Micro-Details
The time display is set at 6 o’clock, subtly inclined to face the wearer. It features a black sunray dial finished with black DLC treatment and applied polished numerals. The hands are skeletonized and finished using a rare tremblage technique, adding texture for improved legibility.

Mechanically, this inclined subdial is made possible by a custom conical gear system designed to transfer motion at an angle — an engineering choice that underscores the technical ambition of the otherwise minimal display.
Finishing and Materials
Despite its modern design, the SP One movement showcases traditional finishing techniques. Handmade anglage adorns all visible bridges and wheels, while prominent gold chatons secure the jewels. Viewed from the reverse side, the sapphire caseback reveals additional depth, layering elements at varying heights for a dynamic display of horology.

Surrounding the movement is a sharply bevelled inner flange, known as the “amphitheater.” Its color is tailored to match each model: sky blue in the platinum version and a warm anthracite in the rose gold version.
