F.P. Journe Marks Tokyo Boutique Milestone With Ultimate Limited Edition Chronograph FB

F.P. Journe, with the arrival of the new Chronograph FB, also announces that this is the last of the brand’s limited editions.

The new timepiece that celebrates the 20th anniversary of its Boutique Tokyo is the first hand-wound chronograph without the Rattrapante complication built by the brand.

The newcomer is part of the Tokyo Boutique Anniversary Series, which began in 2005 with the 20-piece Chronomètre Souverain, followed in 2006 by the 12-piece Chronomètre à Résonance, in 2007 by the 20-piece Tourbillon Souverain, in 2009 the 99-piece Octa Perpétuelle and lastly in 2016 the 80-piece Centigraphe Souverain.

Like its predecessors, the new F.P. Journe Chronograph FB shares common features such as the polished titanium case ornamented with gold crown and pushers, a ruthenium-coated dial and a burgundy leather strap.

So on the outside, we find a Grade 5 Titanium case measuring 40mm in diameter and 10.40mm thick that comes with a polished finish, sapphire crystal on both sides, 18k 6N gold signed crown at 3 o’clock flanked by two pushers, burgundy alligator leather strap with hand-stitching and a gold folding clasp.

On the solid silver dial we find a centre decorated with a Clous de Paris guilloché pattern where a bridge in brushed steel sits that houses two semi-open registers substantiated in running seconds and a 60-minute counter with red accents, two hands in rose gold tone that combines with Arabic numerals, a large date window at 6 o’clock and a silver tachymeter chapter ring with a base of 1,000 meters, another novelty, which makes the chronograph centre seconds hand describe two complete 360º rotations every minute.

Behind the open case reveals the impressive Caliber 1518.2 in solid gold built specifically for this timepiece with a column wheel, which runs at 21,600 Vph and is capable of offering an impressive 80 hours of power reserve.

The latest limited edition of the collection and also of the brand is made up of 200 pieces that come with individual numbers and can be found in the brand’s official boutiques for a price of CHF 90,000 plus taxes.

Our Opinion

It is with some surprise that F.P. Journe announces the end of limited editions that whether we like it or not marks the end of an era.

Perhaps for its more restricted and discreet audience, it will be difficult to compile the new trends, however, we are certain that the watches continued to maintain the shine of some exclusivity that has always guided the brand and at the same time opened new perspectives for the Maison.

Watches For A Cause: Notable Sales At The 10th Only Watch Auction

The 10th edition of the Only Watch auction, originally scheduled for November 2023, finally took place in Geneva on May 10. Despite the withdrawal of 16 brands, including prominent names like Audemars Piguet and Chopard, the event still featured 47 captivating pieces. Highlights included the unique Patek Philippe 6301A Steel Sonnerie Minute Repeater, Rexhep Rexhepi’s Chronometre Antimagnétique, and submissions from other notable brands and independent watchmakers.

Bidding for the auction occurred exclusively via phone or in the auction room due to an IT security issue that forced Christie’s to take its website offline the night before the sale. Despite this challenge, the auction successfully raised CHF 28,320,000, a figure on par with the 2021 edition.

Notably, the Patek Philippe 6301A stole the show, fetching CHF 15.7 million, well surpassing its estimated value.

Rexhep Rexhepi’s Chronometre Antimagnétique followed closely, selling for CHF 2.1 million, solidifying its status as a favourite among Only Watch enthusiasts.

F.P. Journe’s Chronometre Bleu Furtif, featuring the new Calibre 1522, achieved a commendable result of CHF 2 million, underscoring the enduring allure of innovative timepieces at the event.

Christie’s Watches Makes Over CHF 40 Million

Last weekend was marked by the Geneva auctions that took place in the main auction houses, among them Christie’s, which for two days presented 199 pieces distributed in two main lots:

Lot “Rare Watches” took place on the 13th of May, where 159 lots were presented resulting in a total of CHF 26.5 Million in which 98% of the total pieces were sold.

Lot “The Art of F.P. Journe” which happened on the 12th of May, presented a total of 40 lots at auction, which was fully sold for CHF 13.7 Million.

During these two days 6 watches were sold for over CHF 1 Million and 4 for over CHF 500,000, and among bidders and buyers, 52% were from Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), 24% Americas and 24% Asia Pacific (APAC).

The top seller of the Lot “The Rare Watches”:

– Lot 84, Steel Patek Philippe for Tiffany & Co., sold for CHF 2,233,000

– Lot 138, Patek Philippe Ref. 3974 2497R, sold for CHF 1,918,000

– Lot 132, Patek Philippe Ref. 2499, sold for CHF 1,618,000

– Lot 131, Patek Phillipe Ref. 2497, sold for CHF 1,497,000

– Lot 31, Rolex Daytona with a Diamond set-bezel and sapphire set dial and bracelet Ref. 6269, sold for CHF 1,134,000

The top seller of the Lot “The Art of F.P. JOURNE”:

– Lot 2039, Platinum Tourbillon Souverain ‘Souscription” 2/20, sold for CHF 2,707,000

We also highlight three auctioned pieces from the Lot “The Rare Watches” that far exceed the estimated maximum bids:

– Lot 1, Tudor Black Bay – Made for Platinum Jubilee Royal, Est. CHF 6,000 – CHF 12,000, sold for CHF 81,900

Geneva Watch Auction edition XI

During this weekend, the XI Watch Auction is taking place in Geneva, held by Phillips. There are 215 watches that should be easily sold. This event will be led by watch specialist Aurel Bacs, a senior consultant at Phillips.

At the auction, there will be some of the most popular and desired models on the market, most of the auction will consist of Rolex and Patek Philippe watches, but we can also find there other incredible brands like Audemars Piguet, A. Lange & Söhne, Vacheron Constantin, Cartier, Zenith, Omega, Blancpain and F.P. Journe.

At the time of writing this post, 108 Lots have already been sold and I must say that most Lot’s were sold above the estimated value, but three exceeded all expectations. We are talking about a Patek Philippe. Ref. 1518 of 1948, sold for CHF3,380,000, a beautiful perpetual rose gold calendar, chronograph wristwatch with pink dial and moon phases.

However, the biggest surprise of the day was an F.P. Journe Chronomètre à Resonance “Souscription” from 2000, sold for CHF 1,040,000, a value 6.5 times higher than the highest estimate, this watch is part of a rare limited edition of fewer than 20 pieces, a platinum and pink gold dual time wristwatch with double escapement.

The third winner is also an F.P. Journe, the Tourbillon Souverain “Souscription” from 1999, a rare platinum wristwatch with a tourbillon, numbered 14 of the 20 limited edition pieces, sold for CHF1,400,000.

To conclude this article, we decided to challenge ourselves and choose five of our favourite watches at auction, but we established some rules: first, do not repeat the brands, second, do not consider the price and the third and most important, wanting to use it a lot.

Our choices:

1 – Patek Philippe Nautilus Ref. 3700/1 from 1978, in white gold with the date and integrated bracelet. Despite the 42mm diameter, it is a very beautiful watch and one of the most desired models among watch lovers and we are there too. Sold by CHF740,000.

2 – Zenith El Primero Ref. SP 1301 from circa 1971, a wristwatch with automatic stainless-steel chronograph with the date and brown tropical register. The 37 mm diameter and the tropical dial make this watch an incredible vintage piece. Sold by CHF43,750.

3 – Rolex Explorer Ref. 1016 from 1983, an automatic stainless-steel wristwatch with central seconds and bracelet. The 36mm diameter makes it look incredible, the perfect watch size for many and is one of the most desired models in the Rolex community. Sold by CHF18,750.

4 – A. Lange and Söhne, a Lange 1 Zeitzone Ref. 116,025 from 2005, a very thin platinum double wristwatch, with the date, double day/night indication, power reserve indication and 42mm in diameter. As we cannot lose among the chosen ones, a watch full of complications. To date, this watch has not yet been put up for auction. Estimated value between CHF 20,000 and 40,000.

5 – Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Ref. 5402 from 1975, a rare stainless-steel wristwatch with an integrated bracelet, “tropical” cooper dial and 39mm in diameter. Like the “Nautilus” it is one of the most desired watches. To date, this watch has not yet been put up for auction. Estimated value between CHF40,000 and 80,000.

We will stop here and if there are new and substantial changes, we will update.

Quick update.

The auction just ended and as we predicted all the Lot’s were sold, an amazing work performed by Aurel Bacs. Today we have to point out two more Lot’s sold, first, a Patek Philippe Ref. 2499 from 1957, a very rare yellow gold perpetual calendar chronograph wristwatch with moon phases and 37.5mm diameter. Sold by CHF2,600,000.

Second, another Patek Philippe, this one Ref. 1579 from 1946, a rare platinum chronograph wristwatch with blue hard enamel graphics and spider lugs, with 36mm of diameter. Sold by CHF1,940,000.
