Laurent Ferrier announces the arrival of the Classic Micro-Rotor Magnetic Green with the signature of the Atelier Series.

Like the previous releases of this line, this is another limited and numbered edition of 20 units, which is distinguished mainly by its attractive “mint” green dial, the same one that was successful on the Classic Traveller.

The dial’s two differentiated finishes, depending on exposure to light, provide a visual effect in different shades. On the dial, rest elongated 18K white gold hour markers, hour and minute hands in the centre, a small seconds at 6 o’clock and the brand’s inscription in grey at 12 o’clock.

The watch comes dressed in a 40mm grade 5 titanium case with a polished finish, whose effect is similar to that produced by white gold, but which is four times lighter and features countless beneficial properties, namely anti-allergy. It should also be noted that, on the outside, the watch adds sapphire glass on the front and on the case back, and an onion-shaped crown at three o’clock.

The other highlight of this timepiece is its Caliber FBN229.01 automatic movement, equipped with an 18k solid gold micro-rotor, with a shock-absorbing system and featuring a natural escapement, operating at 21,600 Vph and offering up to 72 hours of power reserve. It is through the open back case that we can observe not only the movement in action but also the impressive finishing work that features, among others, hand-bevelled bridges decorated with a rhodium-plated horizontal satin-brushed finish, mirror-polished and open-worked pallet bridge, bevelled and guilloche rotor.

The watch is offered with a forest green nubuck leather strap with a grade 5 titanium pin buckle and can be purchased at the brand’s store for CHF 49,500 (excl. VAT), with the commitment of the brand for a delivery time of up to 40 days.

Let’s go for a new Pitch Watch

Surprise, surprise, there is a new Grand Sport Tourbillon in the Laurent Ferrier collection, a model launched in 2019 in stainless steel in a very limited edition of only 12 units and which the Swiss watchmaker brand stated that it would not produce anymore, as well after 3 years the brand returns to produce the Grand Sport Tourbillon in a new limited edition and now in 5N red gold.

The new timepiece, which is now offered in a luxurious gold case, comes with an integrated bracelet in the same material with 3 links, instead of the rubber bracelet that accompanied the previous steel edition, with an onion-shaped crown at 3 o’clock, a front sapphire crystal that also extends to the case back engraved with the corresponding “X/24” type numbering.

The dial that maintains the brown colour is now presented in a chocolate tone and with a gradient effect, which comes with gold applied hour markers and alpha hands in the centre all filled with white Super-LumiNova, which in the previous edition was in an orange tone and for last, small seconds at 6 o’clock.

Inside there is nothing new, keeping the manual movement In-house Caliber 619.01 with a tourbillon double balance spring that seems to keep the ruthenium treatment to plates and bridges and that offers up to 80 hours of power reserve.

The 24 units of the new Grand Sport Tourbillon are on sale for CHF 225,000 (excl. taxes) which represents a premium of just over €45,000 (excl. taxes) compared to the steel edition, which, taking into account that comes with a case and integrated bracelet in 5N red gold could be a better deal than the proposal offered in 2019.

Laurent Ferrier, after the previous three editions of the Classic Traveler in steel and red gold, now introduces a limited and therefore more exclusive edition in titanium and with an attractive mint green dial.

The new LF Classic Traveler variant, despite maintaining all the design and characteristics of the previous versions, is undoubtedly more cheerful, welcoming and calming, largely due to the green tones of the dial provided by its sunburst finish that produces different shades depending on its exposure to the light.

The case in titanium, in addition to adding the known anti-allergic properties, better protection against magnetic fields, greater resistance than steel and lighter weight, comes with a polished finish and not with the traditional brushed finish, in order to produce a similar effect of the white gold.

On the “magnetic green” dial, an outer slim ring green, 18k white gold applied hour indexes and central hands, a small seconds with a radial pattern, a date window at 3 o’clock and opposite side a home time window at 9 o’clock, and finally, the brand signature at 12 o’clock.

It should also be noted that the home time window at 9 o’clock is controlled by the crown, while the local time (GMT function) is controlled by the two almost imperceptible pusher buttons located on the case at 8 and 10 o’clock, which work with an hour hand jump mechanism either forwards or backwards. As for the date window, contrary to what is usual, it moves according to the local time and not the home time.

There is also nothing new inside and it is through the sapphire case back that we can see the Caliber LF230.02 automatic movement operating with a micro-rotor that offers up to 80 hours of power reserve, and which stands out for its hand-bevelled decorated bridges and the 18k gold oscillating weight.

Laurent Ferrier has just presented its latest creation, Sport Auto, whose origins date back to around 40 years ago when in 1979 Laurent Ferrier and François Servanin, founders of the Swiss watch brand, together with another friend, François Trisconi, competed together as he teamed up in the iconic 24 Hours of Le Mans race behind the wheel of a Porsche 935 Turbo, which after 292 laps and more than 3,988 km, finished in an honourable third place on the podium just behind Paul Newman, a unique feat given that they were three amateur pilots. It was at that time, still in the euphoria of the result achieved, that Laurent Ferrier offered a Nautilus to his friend François as a thank you for his performance and that the latter challenged Laurent to create his own watch together, thus culminating in the creation of his brand in 2009.

The Laurent Ferrier Sport Auto is based on its two previous Grand Sport Tourbillon models launched in 2019 and 2020 both as limited editions of just 12 units of each variant that featured a robust case of 44mm in diameter and a very attractive design reminiscent of the PP Nautilus design but with astronomical prices above €150k.

Thus, the new Sport Auto features a 41.5mm diameter Grade 5 titanium case, whose surfaces alternate between polished and brushed, accentuating the contrast between the different surfaces and maintaining its sporty and curvilinear lines. Still on the outside, domed sapphire crystal, Laurent Ferrier ball-shaped crown, for the first time, screwed down, which thus allows water resistance up to 120 meters.

The dial in different shades of blue comes with an opaline finish, hour indices and hour and minute hands in white gold filled with Super-LumiNova in aqua green tones, at 6 o’clock a small seconds and at 3 o’clock, and for the first time, a date window. Minute track and the brand’s signature inscriptions followed by “Geneve” at 12 o’clock in grey and the watch model in relief at 6 o’clock between the centre of the clock hands and the sub -small seconds dial.

Inside is the Caliber LF270.01 micro-rotor automatic movement, which operates at 28,800 Vph and offers up to 72 hours of power reserve. The meticulously decorated movement can be seen through the sapphire glass of the case back, which is fixed by four screws, from which the micro-rotor in 950 platinum is fixed between the main plate and the micro-rotor bridge stands out.

Finally, to say that the watch is offered with a grade 5 titanium bracelet that matches the watch case and comes with a folding clasp and can be had for the price of CHF 46,000.

Our Opinion

As we mentioned in 2020 when the Grand Sport Tourbillon was presented at Watches&Wonders, the watch impresses with its beautiful lines, but the fact that it is a limited edition in addition to issues such as dimensions and high price, raised many doubts. Now, with the launch of a current model with more realistic dimensions, the story is different. If the 2020 Grand Sport Tourbillon with a navy dial, indices and hands filled with Super-LumiNova in orange tones matched perfectly, in a more classic tone, the new blue gradient dial with indices and hands filled with green lume don’t stay behind, but now in a more contemporary tone. On the inside, the micro-rotor movement also seems to have been an interesting addition to the watch and if to all this we add the case and integrated bracelet in Grade 5 titanium, we can say that the asking price, although not small, is much more justified.

Grand Sport Tourbillon

As happened a year ago with the launch of this watch for the first time, this new edition comes with the same Limited Edition of 12 pieces, the previous gradient brown dial is now replaced by a deep blue that together with the orange luminescence markers, make this piece a beauty. The other big improvement brought with this launch is the integrated bracelet, replacing the previous rubber strap, bringing a much better balance to the watch.

The 44mm in diameter and the price of €163,500, it seems crazy to us, even recognizing that the watch is beautiful and also has a great movement. Although the 44mm can be justified by the existence of a Tourbillon, the high price seems to be more difficult to explain, given that competing models from leading brands, such as Audemars Piguet through the Royal Oak or Patek Phillipe through the Nautilus seem to be more accessible options.
