Zenith Warms Up The A384 With A New Tropical Dial
Zenith revisits its historic A384 design with the new Chronomaster Revival A384 Tropical, introducing a dial inspired by aged “tropical” tones..
A “Tropical” Take on a Classic Dial
The defining feature of this new reference is its dial execution. Zenith opts for a softly textured white base, contrasted by rich brown subdials and a matching tachymeter scale. This combination—often referred to as a “tropical” or “chocolate panda” layout—evokes the natural patina seen on vintage watches exposed to sunlight over decades.

Legibility remains a priority. Black printing is used on the white sections of the dial, including the brand signature and chronograph scales, while the brown areas feature crisp white markings for clear contrast. A bright red central chronograph seconds hand adds a sporty accent, ensuring quick readability during timing events.
To reinforce the vintage character, the applied hour markers and hands are coated with Old Radium-toned Super-LumiNova, delivering a warm glow that complements the dial’s color palette. A discreet date window is positioned at 4:30, maintaining the symmetry of the design without overpowering the layout.
Faithful Case Design with Distinctive Details
The watch retains the original A384 case profile, a hallmark of late-1960s design. The 37 mm tonneau-shaped case features sharp angles and a compact footprint, offering a distinctive presence on the wrist.

The finishing is carefully executed to highlight the geometry of the case. A radial brushed pattern decorates the top surface, creating a dynamic play of light, while polished bevels add contrast and refinement. Along the sides, horizontal brushing enhances the structured look of the case and reinforces its vintage-inspired character.
On the right side, classic pump pushers and a signed crown with the Zenith star complete the design, staying true to the proportions and functionality of the original model.
The Return of the Ladder Bracelet
Paired with the case is the iconic “ladder” bracelet, originally designed by Gay Frères. Its open construction not only contributes to the retro aesthetic but also improves wearability by reducing weight and increasing airflow on the wrist. The clasp integrates multiple micro-adjustment positions, allowing for a more tailored fit, although adjustments require the use of a tool.

The El Primero Caliber at Its Core
Inside the watch beats the legendary El Primero 400, one of the most historically significant automatic chronograph movements.

This high-frequency caliber operates at 36,000 vibrations per hour, equivalent to 5 Hz, which enables precise time measurement down to one-tenth of a second. It features a traditional column-wheel architecture, a hallmark of refined chronograph construction, and delivers a power reserve of approximately 50 hours, ensuring reliable performance for daily wear.
The El Primero remains a cornerstone of Zenith’s identity, combining technical precision with a heritage that continues to influence modern chronograph design.

Final Thoughts
Rather than reinventing the A384, Zenith refines it through thoughtful dial variation. The tropical execution adds warmth and vintage appeal to an already distinctive chronograph, while preserving the technical strengths and historical proportions that define the model.

For collectors drawn to heritage-inspired designs with authentic mechanical pedigree, this latest iteration offers a compelling blend of past and present.
