Wren Diver One Abyss: A Dive Watch Built Around Absolute Black

There are plenty of ways to make a dive watch stand out, but Wren takes a particularly unusual route with the Diver One Abyss. Rather than relying on bright colours or elaborate complications, the New York-based microbrand has built this limited-edition model around one defining element: an exceptionally light-absorbing black dial.

The Diver One Abyss is part of Wren’s Diver One collection and takes the capable platform of the Diver One Aqua into considerably darker territory. Its most distinctive feature is the use of Musou Black, a water-based acrylic paint developed by Koyo Orient Japan that absorbs approximately 99.40 % of visible light. The result is a dial that appears almost completely devoid of surface reflection, creating an unusually deep visual effect.

A dial designed to disappear

Wren uses the Musou Black treatment across the dial and pairs it with a sandwich construction for the hour markers. The upper dial layer is cut to expose the luminous material underneath, allowing the Super-LumiNova-coated markings to appear almost suspended within the black surface.

This construction gives the watch its characteristic contrast. In normal lighting, the dial remains exceptionally dark, while in low-light conditions the luminous indexes become particularly prominent. The same philosophy extends to the unidirectional diving bezel, which features a fully lumed 60-minute scale.

The bezel uses 120 clicks and provides the functionality expected from a serious dive watch, while its black DLC-coated finish keeps the monochromatic aesthetic intact.

DLC-coated stainless steel construction

The Abyss measures 41 mm in diameter, with a 47 mm lug-to-lug distance and a thickness of 13.30 mm including its domed sapphire crystal. The crystal is fitted with anti-reflective treatment, helping to maintain legibility while reducing reflections over the unusually dark dial.

Both the stainless-steel case and the supplied 22mm bracelet receive a scratch-resistant DLC coating. The black treatment gives the watch a uniform appearance from case to bracelet while adding an extra layer of protection for everyday use.

A signed screw-down crown contributes to the watch’s 200-metre water resistance, placing the Diver One Abyss firmly within conventional recreational diving territory.

Sellita automatic power

Inside the case is the Sellita SW200 automatic movement, a well-established calibre commonly used by independent and microbrand watchmakers. It offers approximately 38 hours of power reserve and provides a straightforward mechanical architecture that is relatively easy to service.

The movement choice also keeps the watch focused on practicality rather than unnecessary complexity. There is no additional complication beyond the time and diving functions, allowing the Abyss to concentrate on its core purpose.

On the reverse, Wren adds polished iconography featuring its bird emblem, alongside the Diver One Abyss name and the individual number of each watch.

Two straps and a limited production run

The watch is delivered on a 22mm stainless-steel bracelet with DLC coating, complemented by a black FKM rubber strap for situations where a more traditional dive-watch setup is preferable.

The Wren Diver One Abyss is priced at USD 1,195, with production limited to just 100 individually numbered examples.
