WRC Comeback: Lancia’s Triumphant Rally Return Accelerates With Ypsilon
Lancia is set to make a sensational return to rallying as early as 2025, competing in the top tier of the World Rally Championship (WRC), according to Italian press. The development of a new rally car, potentially based on the upcoming Lancia Ypsilon, has reportedly begun, with an official announcement expected alongside the unveiling of the new Ypsilon in February. The last time Lancia officially participated in WRC was in 1993, and this potential return after 30 years has generated significant excitement among fans.
Lancia, with its rich rallying history, is the most successful constructor in WRC, boasting 10 titles between 1974 and 1992. The iconic models like Fulvia HF, Stratos HF, Rally 037, Delta S4, and Delta Integrale have left an enduring legacy. The narrative highlights the anticipation for a cinematic portrayal of one of Lancia’s most iconic moments in rallying – the 1983 World Rally Championship victory with the rear-wheel-drive Rally 037 against Audi’s groundbreaking Quattro.
The decision to re-enter rallying aligns with Stellantis’ strategy, led by CEO Carlos Tavares, who is known for his passion for rallying. The selected model for this return is expected to be the Lancia Ypsilon, produced in a Rally 2 configuration, with development starting in 2024 for a debut in 2025 and a new WRC configuration in 2027. This move reflects Stellantis’ focus on rallying and marks an exciting chapter in Lancia’s motorsport history. The Ypsilon’s launch is also tied to a special edition electric version, paying homage to the brand’s founding year in 1906.
