Vacheron Constantin 222 In Steel: A Timeless Icon Returns For The Brand’s 270th Anniversary
In celebration of its 270th anniversary, Vacheron Constantin has reintroduced one of its most iconic designs: the Vacheron Constantin Historique 222 in stainless steel. This long-anticipated release follows last year’s successful revival of the gold 222, paying tribute to a design that first debuted in 1977. With its integrated bracelet, notched bezel, and elegant simplicity, the steel 222 is a fitting homage to the golden era of luxury sports watches.
The 1977 Legacy: Design and Functionality
Originally launched in 1977, the Vacheron Constantin 222 made waves with its innovative design and technical excellence. The integrated bracelet, inspired by the Maltese cross, seamlessly blended with the ultra-thin 3.05mm movement, enabling a svelte 7mm case. Its standout features included a 37mm case diameter, 120m water resistance and the distinct notched bezel. The 222 quickly became a symbol of sophistication, combining luxury with practicality in a way that resonated with watch enthusiasts.
2024 Stainless Steel Edition: What’s New?
Building on the legacy of the 222, this year’s stainless steel version incorporates modern updates while retaining its vintage appeal. Here’s what you can expect, a slightly larger case with the dimensions of 37mm diameter, 7.95mm thick, and 45.30mm lug-to-lug length and a reduced to 50m water resistance compared to the original’s 120m.
A matte blue dial featuring polished indexes and luminescent hands, a framed date window at 3 o’clock and the embossed Maltese cross brand at noon.
Calibre 2455/2, a modern In-house automatic movement with 40 hours of power reserve, running at 28,800 Vph. The gold rotor, visible through the sapphire case back, echoes the design of the bezel with its notched pattern and the 222 inscription.
The integrated bracelet, now with hidden pins and a butterfly folding clasp, adds to the comfort and aesthetic refinement.
Price and Availability
The Vacheron Constantin 222 in Steel is priced at €35,200 and is exclusively available through the brand’s official boutiques. Unlike limited editions, this model becomes a permanent addition to Vacheron Constantin’s collection, ensuring wider availability for collectors and enthusiasts.
Our Opinion: A Vintage Masterpiece Reimagined
The new 222 in steel is a stunning blend of heritage and modernity. The matte blue dial harmonizes beautifully with the brushed steel case, making it a visual masterpiece. While purists may lament the reduced water resistance and the slightly larger dimensions, these updates reflect the evolving demands of modern watchmaking. The transition from the original Jaeger-LeCoultre-based Calibre 1121 to the in-house Calibre 2455/2 is another nod to contemporary innovation.
