Ulysse Nardin Unveils The Freak X Gold Enamel With Guilloché
Ulysse Nardin continues to push the boundaries of mechanical watchmaking with the launch of the Freak X Gold Enamel, a new limited edition model that brings together high horology and traditional decorative techniques. Positioned within the Freak X line—known for distilling the radical DNA of the original Freak into a more wearable and accessible format—this new release marks a refined yet visually arresting addition to the collection.

A Dial That’s Not Quite a Dial
At the heart of the Freak X Gold Enamel lies what appears to be a dial but is technically the mainplate of the movement itself. This surface has been elaborately decorated with a guilloché pattern and finished with a vivid layer of blue enamel, offering depth, texture, and sheen. The unique combination of these artisanal elements transforms the movement’s architecture into a stage for the time-telling carousel.

A Technical Marvel
The Freak X is immediately recognizable thanks to its unconventional display. Instead of traditional hour and minute hands, time is indicated through a rotating movement module that acts as a minute hand, while a secondary pointer mounted on a rotating disc shows the hours. This carousel-style mechanism is powered by the automatic UN-230 calibre, a fusion of two Ulysse Nardin movements (UN-118 and UN-250).

Equipped with a 72-hour power reserve and beating at a frequency of 3Hz (21,600 vibrations per hour), the calibre makes extensive use of silicon—a material pioneered by Ulysse Nardin in the early 2000s. The escapement wheel, balance spring, and anchor are all crafted from this wear-resistant and lubricant-free material. The oversized silicon balance wheel, which forms part of the minute hand structure, is fitted with nickel flyweights and micro-blades to enhance stability during rotation.
Case Construction and Wearability
The watch is housed in a 43 mm case that combines rose gold with blue PVD-coated titanium, a contrasting and contemporary mix that reflects the Freak X’s balance of tradition and innovation. With a thickness of 13.38 mm, it maintains a strong wrist presence while staying relatively slim for a piece of such complexity.

Unlike the original Freak models, the Freak X includes a traditional crown at 3 o’clock for setting the time, making it more intuitive to operate. This practical touch is part of what defines the Freak X collection—maintaining avant-garde principles while improving daily usability.
