Two New Seiko 5 Sports Inspired by the Former “Time Sonar”
A little over a week ago we talked here about two new iterations of the Seiko 5 Sports SKX series that stood out for presenting for the first time a special edition camouflage dial in collaboration with Japanese skater Yuto Horigome, and today, a few days later, Seiko presents two new limited editions within the same series, this time in collaboration with renowned Japanese graphic designer Kosuke Kawamura, who already has collaborated with Adidas, G-Shock , Uniqlo, Akira among others brands.
Inspired by various elements from different Seiko models from the 60s and 70s, the two new Seiko 5 Sports variants feature a dial reminiscent of the vintage Seiko 7015-6010 “Time Sonar” whose dial resembled a sonar.
Now, the most outstanding note of the two new Seikos is the dial which, like the “Time Sonar” from the ’70s, stood out for being semi-transparent in different colours revealing the two day-date wheels, with emphasis on the internal day wheel which, like the vintage model, displays the days of the week in English and Japanese alternately. Unlike the Time Sonar which featured a semi-transparent dial in a single colour, although there were different variants in different shades, the new Seiko 5 Sports features a dual colour semi-transparent dial, the SRPJ41 in orange and blue “Tifanny” (here we go again!) and the SRPJ43 in grey and blue tones.
Also on the dial, the new watches feature slim minute and hour pencil hands in white matching the day-date window, an orange central second hand and some red accents, namely the triangle at 12 o’clock.
Outside, the unmistakable 42.5mm stainless steel case from the SKX series, unidirectional bezel with indexes and scale design, hardlex crystal, crown at 3 o’clock, see-through case back decorated with “Limited Edition” inscriptions and Kosuke Kawamura’s signature and 100 meters of water resistance.
Inside, there’s nothing new, powered by the Caliber 4R36 automatic movement, which comes with manual winding and hacking seconds and offers up to 41 hours of power reserve.
Both watches are offered with a steel bracelet with a three-fold clasp, and an extra black Nato strap in the SRPJ43 variant. The SRPJ41 edition is limited to 3,000 units while the SRPJ43 is a more exclusive edition that counts with only 500 units.
