Tudor Northflag Returns With A New GMT Movement And A More Compact Case

Tudor has brought back one of its most distinctive modern watches. First introduced in 2015, the North Flag was an unconventional model within the brand’s catalogue and, more importantly, marked a major technical milestone as the first Tudor watch to use an in-house movement.

Discontinued in 2021, the watch now returns under the simplified Northflag name. The new reference 9140G1A0U retains many of the visual elements that defined the original while introducing a GMT complication, an updated movement and a revised case architecture.

A More Compact 40mm Case

The new Tudor Northflag is housed in a 40 mm case crafted from 316L stainless steel. It measures 12.70 mm thick with a lug-to-lug distance of 48.80 mm.

The case features predominantly brushed surfaces with limited polished details, maintaining the tool-watch character of the collection. Water resistance is rated to 100 metres, while a domed sapphire crystal protects the dial.

Another important feature is the sapphire display caseback, allowing a view of the movement inside.

The MT5652-U Master Chronometer Movement

At the heart of the Northflag is Tudor’s MT5652-U automatic manufacture movement.

The movement operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour, or 4Hz, and carries METAS Master Chronometer certification. Tudor states an accuracy range of between -0 and +5 seconds per day.

The MT5652-U is also equipped with a practical GMT function. A central 24-hour hand displays a second time zone, while the local hour hand can be independently adjusted in one-hour increments.

This “flyer GMT” configuration is particularly useful when travelling, allowing the wearer to quickly change local time without stopping the watch.

Both the date and GMT functions are adjusted through the crown. The movement can also be seen through the exhibition caseback, adding a feature that is still relatively uncommon among Tudor’s sport-oriented models.

Black and Yellow Return to the Dial

The Northflag remains immediately recognisable through its black dial and yellow accents.

The new model continues this design language with yellow used on the central seconds hand, the GMT hand, the hour scale around the dial’s outer section and the Northflag name.

The GMT display uses a 24-hour scale positioned around the rehaut, providing a clear reference for the additional time zone.

The date window remains positioned at 3 o’clock and features black numerals on a white background within a chamfered aperture.

For low-light visibility, the hands and hour markers are coated with Grade A Super-LumiNova, emitting a blue glow in the dark.

Integrated Steel Bracelet With T-Fit Adjustment

The new Northflag is offered exclusively on a stainless steel integrated bracelet.

The two-link bracelet follows the angular design of the case and is finished mainly with brushed surfaces. Tudor has also equipped the clasp with its T-Fit rapid adjustment system, allowing the bracelet length to be adjusted without tools.

From Power Reserve to GMT

One of the biggest differences between the two generations is the complication.

The original North Flag featured a power-reserve indicator, while the new Northflag replaces it with a second time zone function. The GMT complication gives the new model a more travel-oriented purpose while retaining the collection’s connection to exploration.

The return of the Northflag also brings back one of Tudor’s less conventional designs. Its angular case, integrated bracelet, black-and-yellow colour scheme and now GMT functionality separate it from the more familiar Black Bay family.

The new Tudor Northflag Ref. 9140G1A0U is available exclusively through Tudor boutiques and is priced at CHF 4,500.
