Titanium Meets Tokyo Nights: Inside The New King Seiko VANAC
The revival of King Seiko continues to evolve with a bold new release: the VANAC “Tokyo Highway” series. Unlike its sibling Grand Seiko, which draws heavily from natural landscapes, this collection takes inspiration from the vibrant, electric atmosphere of modern city life—specifically, the illuminated expressways of Tokyo after dark.
A Historic Line Reimagined
The VANAC name traces back to the early 1970s, when King Seiko explored more expressive and unconventional designs. These early models stood out for their angular forms, vivid colors, and distinctive dial layouts, offering a striking contrast to the brand’s more restrained pieces.

The new VANAC “Tokyo Highway” models reinterpret that bold spirit through a contemporary lens, preserving key design cues while refining them for modern tastes.
Dial Design Inspired by Tokyo Nights
The collection is presented in three dial variations—Twilight Violet, Silvertone, and Night Black—each reflecting different aspects of Tokyo’s nighttime highways. From subtle reflections to deeper, shadowy tones, the colors are designed to capture the dynamic atmosphere of the city after dark.

The dials feature a more restrained horizontal texture compared to vintage VANAC references, resulting in a cleaner and more sophisticated look. At the same time, the applied hour markers remain a defining feature, particularly the prominent 12 o’clock index, which retains the bold, geometric identity associated with the original VANAC designs. This combination of texture and structure enhances both legibility and visual depth.
Faceted Titanium Case
The 41 mm case is crafted from titanium and showcases a highly architectural design. Its multi-faceted construction is defined by a combination of brushed flat surfaces and polished edges, creating a strong interplay of light and shadow.

This approach not only emphasizes the watch’s angular profile but also reinforces its modern, urban character. The use of titanium ensures that, despite its bold presence, the watch remains noticeably lighter and more comfortable on the wrist compared to its steel counterparts.
High-Performance Automatic Movement
Inside, the VANAC “Tokyo Highway” is powered by the in-house 8L45 automatic movement, one of the most advanced calibers developed by Seiko outside the Grand Seiko range.
This movement operates at a frequency of 4 Hz, equivalent to 28,800 vibrations per hour, and delivers a power reserve of approximately 72 hours. In terms of precision, it is rated to an accuracy of -5 to +10 seconds per day, offering a strong balance between reliability and performance in daily wear.
Price and Positioning
The King Seiko VANAC “Tokyo Highway” is priced at € 3,950, placing it firmly in the upper tier of the Seiko universe and just below Grand Seiko. Notably, this represents a € 550 premium over the existing stainless steel models equipped with a bracelet, reflecting the upgrade to titanium construction and the collection’s evolving positioning.
Final Thoughts
The new VANAC “Tokyo Highway” variants join the already existing eight stainless steel models introduced last year, including the limited edition “Snoopy,” further expanding the collection’s footprint.

The headline update is undoubtedly the introduction of titanium for the case, bringing with it all the inherent advantages in terms of reduced weight and enhanced comfort. At the same time, the three new dial options adopt a more restrained and mature approach, favoring monochromatic tones over the gilt accents seen in many earlier references, resulting in a cleaner and more versatile aesthetic.
That said, the case dimensions remain a point of contention. At 41mm, the watch continues to wear on the larger side, which may limit its appeal for more average wrist sizes. In our view, this remains the collection’s Achilles’ heel, and a more compact version would not only make sense—but is arguably already overdue.
