The Squale 2001 Diver Is Back—And This Time For Good
The legendary Squale 2001 diver’s watch from the late 1960s makes a triumphant return, this time as a permanent fixture in the brand’s collection. Following the success of last year’s limited edition, which paid tribute to the original with a black dial and a bi-color black and orange bezel to celebrate Squale’s 65th anniversary, the brand now introduces the model in three striking variants: an orange dial with a black bezel, a blue dial with a black bezel, and a black dial with a sand bezel.
Recognized for its distinctive barrel-shaped stainless steel case with hidden lugs, the Squale 2001 was the first watch to feature a push-to-release bezel system, designed to prevent accidental rotations. This groundbreaking diver’s watch also holds historical significance, as Jacques Cousteau gifted one to Michael Laval, the first officer of the Calypso vessel, during an Antarctic expedition in 1972.
Retaining its iconic design, the Squale 2001 revival comes in a 40mm case with a thickness of 13mm and a lug-to-lug measurement of 43.60mm. The watch features a primarily brushed finish, a sapphire crystal, and a bi-directional bezel with a sapphire insert that now comes in a single color infused with luminescent material. The push-to-release bezel system remains intact, ensuring a secure and precise diving experience. Additionally, the recessed crown at 4 o’clock, bearing the Squale signature, and the screwed solid case back contribute to an impressive 600-meter water resistance rating.
The orange and black dial variants boast a matte finish, while the blue dial showcases a stunning sunray-brushed texture. Each dial is adorned with applied hour markers and hands filled with Super-LumiNova C3, ensuring optimal readability in low-light conditions. A white-background date window at 3 o’clock, a white minute track rehaut, and a lollipop-style center seconds hand enhance the watch’s aesthetic appeal. The Squale lettering at noon, followed by three lines of text and the traditional shark logo at 6 o’clock, reinforce the brand’s rich diving heritage.
At the heart of the Squale 2001 lies the dependable 26-jewel Sellita SW200 automatic movement, operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour and providing a power reserve of 38 hours. The watch is paired with a historically significant ladder-style steel bracelet, secured with a folding clasp, offering both comfort and durability. Priced at €1,770, the Squale 2001 is a compelling option for enthusiasts seeking a classic yet robust diver’s watch that blends history, innovation, and timeless design.
