Seiko expands its Prospex Speedtimer collection with the introduction of the Speedtimer ‘Youngtimer’ Solar Chronograph, a trio of models inspired by the so-called “youngtimer” era in automotive culture. The term is typically used for cars produced roughly between the late 1980s and early 2000s—vehicles that are not yet considered classic but are increasingly recognised for their future collectability. Seiko applies this concept to a modern chronograph by blending established design codes with contemporary colour choices and solar-powered technology.

Familiar Chronograph Layout with a Modern Twist

At the core of the Speedtimer ‘Youngtimer’ design is a panda-style chronograph layout, one of the most recognisable configurations in watchmaking. Characterised by contrasting sub-dials against a lighter main dial, the panda format has long been associated with legibility and motorsport timing instruments. Seiko retains this classic visual structure while introducing less conventional dial colours to distinguish the ‘Youngtimer’ series from standard Speedtimer references.

The collection consists of three dial variants, a traditional black-and-white panda configuration (SSC961P1), a pink dial with black sub-dials (SSC963P1), and a mint green dial with black sub-dials (SSC965P1).

The coloured dials move away from purely vintage references and place the watches firmly in a modern context, reflecting current trends while maintaining a balanced, functional appearance.

Case and Bezel

All three models are housed in a 39 mm stainless steel case, a size that aligns with the original Speedtimer proportions and ensures broad wearability. The case features a combination of brushed and polished surfaces, contributing to a robust yet refined profile suitable for everyday use.

The mint green version stands out within the lineup due to its stainless steel bezel, whereas the black-and-white and pink variants are fitted with black bezels. The steel bezel integrates seamlessly with the case, giving the watch a more uniform, technical appearance. In contrast, the black bezels on the other two models create stronger visual separation and a more traditional sports-watch aesthetic.

Solar Quartz Movement

Powering the Prospex Speedtimer ‘Youngtimer’ is Seiko’s Calibre V192 solar quartz chronograph movement. The movement is charged via light absorbed through the dial, eliminating the need for regular battery replacements. Once fully charged, the watch offers an approximate power reserve of six months, even in complete darkness.

The calibre offers a full chronograph function with a central chronograph seconds hand, a 60-minute chronograph counter, and a running seconds display, alongside a discreet date window. Thanks to its quartz regulation, the movement provides a high level of accuracy while maintaining low maintenance requirements, making it particularly suitable for everyday wear.

Legibility and Functionality

Legibility is a key focus of the Speedtimer ‘Youngtimer’. The contrasting sub-dials, applied hour markers, and clear minute track ensure that time and chronograph readings remain easy to interpret. Seiko’s use of LumiBrite on the hands and markers further enhances visibility in low-light conditions.

The watches are fitted with a 3-row stainless steel bracelets that match the case finish, reinforcing the cohesive, tool-oriented design language of the Prospex range.

Pricing and Availability

The Seiko Prospex Speedtimer ‘Youngtimer’ Solar Chronograph is priced at GBP 640, regardless of dial colour. While the release does not introduce a new case or movement, it expands the Speedtimer lineup with distinctive colour options that bridge classic chronograph design and contemporary styling.

With its compact dimensions, solar-powered movement, and motorsport-inspired layout, the Speedtimer ‘Youngtimer’ offers a modern interpretation of a familiar chronograph format, positioned as a versatile and accessible sports watch within Seiko’s Prospex collection.
