The Seiko 5 Sports HUF SRPM09 And Its Modern Take On The Time Sonar Concept
The Seiko 5 Sports collection continues to evolve through collaborations that connect mechanical watchmaking with contemporary culture. The new SRPM09, developed in partnership with HUF, introduces a bold chromatic identity and a semi-transparent dial inspired by Seiko’s historic Time Sonar concept. Limited to 7,000 pieces, this edition combines recognizable Seiko 5 architecture with a distinctive aesthetic approach.
Who Are HUF?
HUF was founded in 2002 by professional skateboarder Keith Hufnagel. What began as a boutique in San Francisco carrying a curated selection of skate and streetwear brands quickly evolved into a fully established label. Rooted in skateboarding culture, HUF built its identity around street aesthetics, counterculture references, and bold graphic language.

Over the years, the brand has gained international recognition within skateboarding and streetwear communities, becoming known for its distinctive use of green tones and clean yet impactful design codes. This visual identity plays a central role in the SRPM09 collaboration.
Case and Construction
The watch is housed in a stainless steel case finished with a combination of brushed and polished surfaces, offering a balanced contrast between sportiness and refinement. It measures 39.40 mm in diameter, 11.60 mm in thickness, and 48.10 mm from lug to lug, proportions that place it comfortably within the classic mid-size range of the Seiko 5 Sports lineup.

In contrast to earlier Time Sonar-inspired executions that featured rotating bezels, this model adopts a fixed polished bezel, giving the case a cleaner and more symmetrical appearance. A Hardlex crystal protects the dial, maintaining Seiko’s proprietary hardened mineral glass solution within this price segment. Water resistance is rated at 100 meters, making it suitable for everyday wear and light aquatic activities. The crown follows a push-pull construction, consistent with the practical character of the collection.
Turning the watch over reveals a screw-down caseback fitted with a green-tinted mineral crystal. The caseback is decorated with a graphic referencing San Francisco, a nod to HUF’s origins, while also allowing a view of the mechanical movement inside.
Semi-Transparent Dial
The dial is the defining visual element of the SRPM09. Executed in a vivid neon green tone, it adopts a semi-transparent construction that reveals part of the underlying day-date mechanism. This layered design creates depth and references the original Time Sonar models from the 1970s, which were known for their translucent dial architecture.

Applied hour markers structure the display, while an orange triangle at 12 o’clock adds a contrasting focal point. The central seconds hand is also finished in orange, reinforcing the visual coherence of the design. A black inner framing section surrounds the day-date aperture, emphasizing the calendar indications and enhancing legibility against the translucent background. The hands are filled with LumiBrite, ensuring visibility in low-light conditions.
Movement: Calibre 4R36
Inside the SRPM09 beats Seiko’s in-house automatic calibre 4R36, a proven workhorse movement widely used within the Seiko 5 Sports family. Operating at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour (3Hz), it delivers approximately 41 hours of power reserve.

The movement supports both automatic and manual winding and includes a hacking seconds function, allowing for precise time setting. The day-date complication is displayed at 3 o’clock, partially visible through the dial’s transparent structure and fully integrated into the watch’s layered aesthetic.
Bracelet and Presentation
The watch is fitted with a three-link stainless steel bracelet secured by a folding clasp, maintaining the cohesive steel-on-steel execution. The finishing complements the case design and reinforces the model’s sporty yet versatile character.

Each piece is presented in a dedicated stainless steel box, underscoring its limited-edition status and aligning with the collaborative nature of the release.
