Caravelle, once a household name under Bulova in the 1960s and 1970s, has returned to its roots with a faithful reissue of its classic Sea Hunter dive watch. Known among collectors for the original “Devil Diver” variant from 1969 with its distinctive 666-foot water-resistance marking, the new Sea Hunter blends vintage aesthetics with updated specifications—offering enthusiasts a stylish automatic diver at an approachable price.

Vintage Design, Modern Build

The new Sea Hunter stays remarkably true to the visual language of its predecessor. Its matte-black dial hosts printed luminescent indices, with Arabic numerals at 12, 6, and 9 adding a subtle hint of retro charm. A neatly framed date window sits at the 3 o’clock position, adding everyday practicality without disrupting the clean symmetry of the layout. To enhance the vintage look, the lume has been given a golden fauxtina tone, contrasting beautifully with the crisp white text and the oversized minute track that circles the dial.

The hands mirror those found on the 1969 original: a spade-tipped hour hand and a sword-shaped minute hand that stand out clearly against the dark backdrop. Around the dial, a unidirectional rotating bezel fitted with a fully marked black aluminum insert and a luminous pip at 12 o’clock reinforces its diving pedigree. One of the few changes from the original design is the case size. Whereas the vintage model measured 35 millimetres across, the new Sea Hunter comes in at 39 millimetres. This increase brings the watch closer to modern tastes without losing its vintage character, making it a comfortable and versatile size for most wrists.

While the styling stays faithful, Caravelle has made several practical updates. The watch now features a domed mineral glass crystal in place of the vintage acrylic. Although mineral glass is more susceptible to scratches than sapphire, it offers better impact resistance and allows Caravelle to keep the price at an accessible level. The crystal’s gentle dome also enhances the watch’s vintage-inspired look.

Water resistance remain, thanks to a screw-down crown and solid case construction, the Sea Hunter offers a robust 200 metres (666 feet) of water resistance, making it a true diver’s watch rather than simply a vintage-styled piece. The watch is paired with a stainless-steel Oyster-style bracelet that improves on vintage examples, incorporating solid end links, quick-release spring bars, and a safety-latched folding clasp for a more secure and comfortable fit.

Inside the Sea Hunter ticks the Miyota Calibre 8215, a 21-jewel automatic movement produced by Citizen, which now owns both Bulova and Caravelle. Known for its reliability and ease of servicing, the movement features hacking seconds and delivers steady, dependable performance—perfect for a watch built to handle everyday use and underwater adventures alike.

Pricing and Availability

Perhaps the most compelling part of the Sea Hunter’s return is its price. With a suggested retail price of around € 322.95 (plus tax), it offers a rare combination of features: a fully fledged automatic dive watch with 200 metres of water resistance, a vintage-inspired design rooted in history, and a comfortable 39 millimetre case size that suits modern tastes.

Although availability is currently limited, the watch is expected to appear at more retailers in the near future as stock becomes more widely distributed. When it does, it promises to offer one of the most appealing value propositions in the entry-level mechanical dive watch category.
