The Portugieser Goes Dark: IWC Introduces A Ceratanium Limited Edition
IWC Schaffhausen introduces a striking new interpretation of its iconic Portugieser Chronograph, presenting the model in Ceratanium for the first time. Traditionally known for its refined, maritime-inspired elegance, the Portugieser takes on a far more technical and contemporary personality in this limited edition, defined by its stealth-like all-black execution.
Ceratanium Case: Technical Innovation Meets Subtle Aesthetics
The watch retains the familiar and well-balanced proportions of the collection, measuring 41 mm in diameter and 13.10 mm in thickness. However, the visual and tactile experience is entirely transformed thanks to the use of Ceratanium. This proprietary material begins as a specially developed titanium alloy which, through a high-temperature firing process, undergoes a structural transformation. Rather than applying a surface coating, the heat treatment alters the outer layer of the metal itself, forming a ceramic-like surface.

The result is a case that combines the lightweight and structural resilience of titanium with the hardness and scratch resistance associated with ceramic. At the same time, it avoids the brittleness often linked to full ceramic cases. The entire exterior—including the case, crown, and chronograph pushers—features a uniform matte black finish, eliminating polished elements and reinforcing the watch’s contemporary, understated presence.
A Monochromatic Dial with Refined Detail
The dial design follows the same monochrome philosophy. A deep black base is complemented by applied Arabic numerals, indices, and a quarter-second scale executed in glossy anthracite tones. This subtle contrast creates depth without disrupting the overall dark aesthetic.

The chronograph layout remains faithful to the classic Portugieser configuration, with two recessed subdials positioned at 12 and 6 o’clock. Slim feuille-style hands preserve the elegance that defines the collection, while a printed minute track on the rehaut frames the dial. Although the color palette is deliberately restrained, the applied elements reflect light at certain angles, ensuring that legibility is maintained despite the low-contrast approach.
Manufacture Caliber 69355
Powering the watch is IWC’s in-house automatic chronograph caliber 69355, visible through a smoked sapphire crystal caseback that complements the overall dark theme. The movement is built around a column-wheel architecture, a hallmark of traditional chronograph construction, and uses a bi-directional pawl winding system. It delivers a power reserve of approximately 46 hours and drives the chronograph hours and minutes display in a clean, symmetrical arrangement.

The tinted sapphire caseback subtly obscures the movement, adding to the watch’s cohesive aesthetic while still allowing enthusiasts to appreciate its mechanical structure.
Sportier Character with Classic Foundations
Although the Portugieser Chronograph Ceratanium presents a more athletic personality, it retains the collection’s traditional 30-meter water resistance. The watch is fitted with a black rubber strap, a practical and contemporary choice that enhances daily wearability and emphasizes its modern positioning.

This combination of technical material, monochromatic styling, and classic chronograph architecture creates a distinctive contrast. The refined proportions and elegant dial layout remain unmistakably Portugieser, yet the Ceratanium construction introduces a bold and unconventional dimension to the collection.
