Alpina continues to strengthen its adventure-ready lineup with the release of the new Alpiner Extreme Automatic 39 mm California editions. Drawing inspiration from the brand’s 1938 Alpina 4, the new models carry forward the spirit of durability and precision that defined the original sports watch. With two new dial options — earthy green and warm brown — the Alpiner Extreme California brings vintage flair to modern functionality.

A Compact and Capable Case

The latest Alpiner Extreme features a 39 mm stainless steel case that measures 40.50 mm lug-to-lug and 11.50 mm in height, offering a versatile size for a wide range of wrists. The design is defined by Alpina’s signature cushion-shaped profile with rounded edges and a fixed circular bezel secured by six exposed screws. Its 200-meter water resistance underscores its tool-watch credentials.

The case alternates between vertical brushing, circular finishing, and polished accents that emphasize its geometric construction. A screw-down crown with a black rubber grip — complete with a raised checker pattern — ensures ease of use and matches the integrated rubber strap designed for comfort and resilience.

The Return of the California Dial

A highlight of these new models is the distinctive California dial, a design that combines Roman numerals on the upper half and Arabic numerals on the lower, originally developed in the late 1930s for enhanced legibility in military settings. The layout also includes horizontal markers at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock, and an inverted triangle at 12 o’clock — classic California dial hallmarks that aid orientation at a glance.

The sandblasted dial surface features a gradient color effect, darkening toward the outer edge for added depth. Large, applied numerals and indices coated in vintage beige Super-LumiNova ensure readability in low light. The hour and minute hands follow the same luminous treatment, while the seconds hand bears the brand’s red Alpina triangle counterweight — a subtle nod to its heritage. A date display at 3 o’clock completes the layout.

Proven Automatic Movement

Inside, the Alpiner Extreme California is powered by the AL-525 automatic movement, based on the reliable Sellita SW200. Operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, the movement offers a 38-hour power reserve and features a customized black rotor visible through the sapphire caseback.

The Alpina Alpiner Extreme Automatic 39 mm California is available with either a green or brown gradient dial, each paired with a textured rubber strap. Both models are priced at € 1,695.
