Two Time Zones, One Suspended Balance: The New MB&F LM1 EVO

The art of watchmaking at MB&F has never been about following convention. With its suspended balance wheels, sculptural movements and unconventional displays, the independent Swiss watchmaker has consistently challenged traditional ideas of mechanical watch design. Now, the Legacy Machine 1 returns in a new EVO configuration, bringing a series of technical and practical improvements to one of the brand’s distinctive creations.

Introduced as the LM1 EVO, the latest model retains the original’s signature architecture while adopting a smaller case, improved shock protection, greater water resistance and an extended power reserve. The result is a more versatile interpretation of the independent dual-time watch, available in titanium or rose gold.

A More Compact and Robust Case

The LM1 EVO features a 42 mm case, down from the 44 mm dimensions of the original LM1. Available in titanium or 5N+ red gold, the two versions offer different interpretations of the same design. Titanium emphasises lightness and a contemporary sporting character, while rose gold introduces a more traditional luxury aesthetic.

A key technical addition is MB&F’s FlexRing shock absorber, designed to protect the movement against impacts and sudden movements. Water resistance has also increased from 30 metres to 80 metres, supported by screw-down crowns. These improvements make the LM1 EVO better suited to regular wear, although its complex construction remains far removed from the requirements of a dedicated diving watch.

Two crowns allow the wearer to adjust the two time displays independently, preserving the defining functionality of the LM1 while accommodating its more robust case construction.

An Unconventional Dual-Time Display

The dial remains the focal point of the LM1 EVO. Above the main dial plate, a large balance wheel is suspended in a prominent three-dimensional structure, creating the impression that the regulating organ is floating over the time displays.

Below it, two inclined subdials display hours and minutes for separate time zones. Each can be adjusted independently, allowing the wearer to follow two locations simultaneously. The mechanism also accommodates time zones offset from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) by 30 or 45 minutes, rather than restricting the display to full-hour differences.

The titanium edition combines a silver-coloured dial plate with black subdials, incorporating spiral and circular brushing to distinguish the different surfaces. The rose gold version pairs a vivid green dial plate with black time displays, creating a more colourful contrast against the warm metal of the case.

At six o’clock, the power reserve indicator has also been redesigned. Instead of the linear display found on the original LM1, the EVO uses a semicircular, speedometer-inspired indication that reinforces the updated model’s sporting character.

A Refined Hand-Wound Movement

Powering the LM1 EVO is a manually wound mechanical movement developed around the distinctive architecture of the Legacy Machine 1. Its power reserve has increased from 45 to 60 hours, giving the wearer additional time between winding sessions.

The movement’s regulating system receives an important technical update through the adoption of a Straumann double hairspring. This configuration uses two hairsprings within a single balance assembly, arranged in opposing directions to counteract certain positional and rate deviations. The objective is to improve isochronism, helping the movement maintain consistent timekeeping as it operates.

The oversized balance wheel measures 14mm in diameter and oscillates at 18,000 vibrations per hour, equivalent to 2.5Hz. Its exposed position above the dial makes the regulating organ both a functional component and a defining visual feature of the watch.

The combination of the double hairspring, extended power reserve and shock-absorbing case construction gives the LM1 EVO meaningful technical changes beyond its revised external appearance.

Rubber Straps and Everyday Versatility

Completing the EVO transformation is a rubber strap fitted with a quick-change system. The titanium model comes with a grey strap, while the rose gold edition is paired with a black version.

The system allows the wearer to change straps without an elaborate process, providing an alternative to the more traditional exotic leather strap associated with the original LM1. It also reflects the broader EVO philosophy of adapting MB&F’s elaborate mechanical creations to a more active lifestyle.

Despite these practical changes, the LM1 EVO retains the intricate construction and distinctive visual identity that define the Legacy Machine collection.

Price and Availability

The MB&F LM1 EVO in titanium joins the collection as a non-limited production model, priced at CHF 82,000 before VAT. The 5N+ red gold version is limited to 33 pieces and costs CHF 102,000 before VAT.

Both versions combine the original LM1’s independent dual-time functionality with the updated case, movement and strap features introduced for the EVO range.

Our Opinion

The LM1 EVO demonstrates how MB&F can evolve an established design without losing the mechanical spectacle that made it distinctive. The reduction to 42 mm, improved shock protection, 80-metre water resistance and longer power reserve all contribute to a more practical watch, while the double hairspring adds a meaningful technical development.

The titanium version is arguably the more natural fit for the EVO concept, combining a lighter case with a restrained silver-and-black colour scheme. The green dial and rose gold combination, meanwhile, offers a more expressive alternative for collectors who prefer their watches to make a stronger visual statement.

Neither version could be described as conventional or understated, and the pricing firmly places them in the realm of high-end independent watchmaking. Nevertheless, the LM1 EVO represents a significant return for the model, bringing its unusual dual-time display and exposed balance wheel into a more robust and versatile package.

F.P. Journe Unveils A Unique Chronograph In Support Of The Fondation Prince Albert II

F.P. Journe and H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco have joined forces once again to create a unique timepiece for the monarch’s upcoming charity auction. The Chronographe Fondation Prince Albert II De Monaco combines a distinctive burgundy-and-bone dial with a two-tone precious-metal case and a hand-wound chronograph movement derived from the brand’s Chronographe FB.

Created exclusively for the Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco, the watch follows three previous collaborations: the Chronographe Rattrapante in 2018, the Chronomètre Optimum in 2022 and the Chronomètre à Résonance in 2024. Each has presented a different interpretation of F.P. Journe’s mechanical watchmaking, while maintaining a visual connection through the foundation’s characteristic colour palette.

A chronograph with a distinctive identity

The most immediate feature of the new timepiece is its burgundy lacquered dial, which provides the background for an unusually dense arrangement of indications. The numerals and lettering draw inspiration from oracle bones, an early form of Chinese writing, giving the display a graphic character that sets it apart from the brand’s more restrained chronograph designs.

The dial combines several scales and indications within a relatively compact layout. A pair of sub-dials occupies the lower portion, while the central chronograph display and additional markings create a layered composition. The bone-coloured typography contrasts sharply with the burgundy surface, making the various indications easy to distinguish despite their abundance.

This is not simply a colour variation of the Chronographe FB. The foundation edition has its own visual language, with the typography and dial arrangement giving it an identity of its own.

Platinum and rose gold

The case continues the two-tone approach used in previous Fondation creations, combining platinum and 18k rose gold. The white-metal front and rear bezels contrast with the rose-gold case body, creating a configuration that recalls François-Paul Journe’s first tourbillon pocket watch, although the arrangement is reversed.

The precious-metal construction extends to the caseback, where the movement can be admired through the open back. As with other F.P. Journe creations, the finishing of the movement forms an important part of the watch’s appeal, complementing the unusual exterior rather than remaining hidden beneath a solid case.

A new interpretation of the Chronographe FB movement

Inside the watch is the hand-wound Calibre 1518.3, a development of the Calibre 1518.2 used in the Chronographe FB. The movement retains the architecture of that platform but introduces an important distinction: the flyback function has been removed.

The result is F.P. Journe’s first conventional chronograph built on this movement architecture. Rather than allowing the watch to reset and restart the chronograph with a single operation, the conventional configuration separates the reset and restart functions. This change gives the foundation edition a different mechanical character from the Chronographe FB while preserving the underlying design of the movement.

The hand-wound calibre is visible through the sapphire-crystal caseback, offering a view of the bridges, finishing and mechanical construction. Its architecture is particularly significant here, as the watch is not merely a unique dial placed over an existing movement, but a distinct interpretation of the chronograph platform.

A unique watch for a charitable cause

The Chronographe Fondation Prince Albert II De Monaco is a one-off creation, and its purpose extends beyond the watch itself. It has been made for the upcoming charity auction organised in support of the Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco, continuing F.P. Journe’s relationship with the organisation.

The previous Chronomètre à Résonance created for the foundation achieved a result of USD 2.98 million at auction, demonstrating the level of interest surrounding these exclusive collaborations. The new chronograph will therefore enter the auction with a strong history behind it, although its final result will ultimately depend on the bidders and the charitable purpose of the sale.

Montblanc Star Legacy Nicolas Rieussec: A Chronograph Inspired By History

Montblanc’s Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph returns in a new limited edition that brings together the brand’s watchmaking expertise, its writing heritage and one of the most important chapters in the history of the chronograph. Limited to 100 pieces, the new model combines a rose gold case with a historically inspired dial, a dual-time function and the manufacture calibre MB R200.

The design is rooted in the work of Nicolas Rieussec, whose 1821 timing device used ink to record the times of horses crossing the finish line at Paris’s Champ de Mars racetrack. It was this invention that helped establish the term “chronograph”, combining the Greek words for time and writing.

A dial built around history

The most distinctive element of the new edition is its black and white dial, which incorporates several references to Rieussec’s invention. Against the darker sections, luminescent inscriptions reproduce handwritten passages from the Academy of Sciences’ approval document, alongside the Academy’s silhouette, a representation of the original ink hand and Rieussec’s signature.

The traditional time display is arranged around a white chapter ring with black Roman numerals, a railway-style minutes track and rose gold-coated leaf hands. Below, the two domed chronograph counters rotate beneath a diamond-shaped blued-steel bridge that serves as the pointer. The left counter records 60 seconds, while the right measures up to 30 minutes.

This configuration remains one of the defining characteristics of the Nicolas Rieussec collection, translating the layout of the historical timing instrument into a mechanical wristwatch.

The raised rose gold-coloured flange adds further historical detail, with “Compteur de Mr Rieussec” on the left and “Paris, Le 15 Octobre 1821” on the opposite side. A framed date window is positioned at 6 o’clock, while a day/night aperture at 9 o’clock complements the travel-oriented display.

Chronograph and dual-time functionality

Beyond its distinctive appearance, the watch is designed to serve as a practical travel companion. Its skeletonised GMT hand is positioned behind the solid hour hand, allowing the latter to indicate local time while the GMT hand continues to track home time.

The GMT hand can be adjusted in one-hour increments by rotating the crown, and the date is linked to the same rapid-reset mechanism. Both the GMT hand and date can be adjusted in either direction, making the function particularly convenient when crossing time zones.

The chronograph itself is operated through a single pusher at 8 o’clock, controlling the start, stop and reset functions. Its layout, with the two rotating counters and central pointer, remains faithful to the collection’s original concept.

Rose gold case with a pocket-watch influence

The 43 mm case is crafted from rose gold and retains the rounded, pebble-shaped profile associated with the Nicolas Rieussec. At 15.01 mm thick, it has a substantial presence on the wrist, while the polished stepped lugs contribute to its more formal appearance.

A fluted onion crown at 3 o’clock reinforces the pocket-watch inspiration and is finished with the Montblanc star logo. The case is completed by the chronograph pusher at 8 o’clock, maintaining the distinctive asymmetrical arrangement of the collection.

Manufacture calibre MB R200

Visible through the display caseback, the automatic calibre MB R200 is an integrated chronograph movement equipped with a column wheel and vertical clutch. Its twin barrels provide a 72-hour power reserve, while the large 10mm balance wheel operates at a frequency of 4Hz.

The movement also incorporates the GMT and date functions, with the rapid-reset system allowing both indications to be adjusted in either direction. The openworked rotor is decorated with a grain d’orge engraving and the profile of the Montblanc star, adding a further connection to the brand’s design language.

A strap inspired by writing instruments

The watch is paired with a black calfskin strap that tapers to a point, echoing the shape of a fountain pen nib. Its underside features portions of an 1821 Parisian map, extending the historical theme beyond the dial and case.

The combination of rose gold, black and white creates a more traditional and dress-oriented interpretation of the Nicolas Rieussec, while the chronograph and GMT functions give it a more practical character.

Daniel Roth Extra Plat Returns In Rose Gold With A Black Gilt Dial

Daniel Roth has introduced a new version of the Extra Plat, combining its compact, ultra-thin profile with a black gilt dial and a 5N rose gold case. The result is a dress watch that brings together traditional dial craftsmanship, restrained proportions and the distinctive design language of the modern Daniel Roth collection.

The new model measures 35.50 mm in diameter and just 7.70 mm in thickness. Its dimensions preserve the Extra Plat’s original emphasis on elegance and wearability, while the rose gold case and dark dial create a more pronounced contrast than the lighter dial variations previously seen in the collection.

A Genuine Gilt Dial

The defining feature of this Extra Plat is its black gilt dial. Unlike watches that simply use gold-coloured printing, a traditional gilt dial reveals the underlying metal of the dial itself.

The process begins with a solid 5N rose gold dial blank. The various sections are then hand-engine-turned on a rose lathe, creating the guilloché patterns that give the dial its characteristic texture and depth.

Once the decorative work is complete, the dial markings—including the Roman numerals, Daniel Roth logo and other inscriptions—are pad-printed with a pink varnish. This protective layer masks the markings during the subsequent electroplating process, when the dial is coated in black.

After the varnish is removed, the original rose gold beneath the markings is revealed. The resulting contrast between the black surface and the exposed gold gives the dial its gilt appearance, while allowing the hand-finished guilloché to remain an important part of the design.

Paired with the 5N rose gold case, the dial gives the Extra Plat a more contemporary and versatile character without moving away from its traditional dress-watch identity.

The DR002 Calibre

Visible through the exhibition caseback is the DR002, an ultra-thin, time-only movement produced by La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton.

The calibre operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour and provides a power reserve of 65 hours. Its architecture is deliberately focused on the essentials, but the movement retains a strong visual presence through the shapes of its bridges and the quality of its finishing.

Anglage and other hand-finishing details contribute to the movement’s refined appearance, making the caseback an important part of the watch rather than simply a way to display its mechanics.

A Compact Expression of Daniel Roth

The Extra Plat has always been defined by its combination of slimness, traditional watchmaking and Daniel Roth’s distinctive design approach. This new rose gold and black gilt version adds another layer of detail to that formula.

Its 35.50 mm case, 7.70 mm thickness and hand-finished dial make it a watch that prioritises proportion and craftsmanship over unnecessary complexity. At the same time, the contrast between the black dial and rose gold case gives it a stronger visual identity than a conventional dress watch.

The new Daniel Roth Extra Plat is priced at CHF 55,000.

Final Thoughts

Like its predecessors, the new Daniel Roth Extra Plat doesn’t disappoint. This is a pure dress watch, where the solitary pair of hands, Roman numerals and finely executed guilloché detail come together to create an expression of understated elegance.

The glossy black dial and rose gold case add another layer of sophistication to an already distinctive timepiece. It is a combination that feels both refined and unmistakably Daniel Roth—and, in my view, one that is almost impossible not to like.

The New Breitling Navitimer B09 Miles Davis Has One Seriously Cool Bracelet

To mark the centenary of Miles Davis’ birth, Breitling has introduced a special Navitimer collection dedicated to one of the most influential figures in jazz history. Unveiled during Geneva Watch Days, the collection revisits a watch associated with Davis while combining vintage-inspired design with Breitling’s modern mechanical chronograph technology.

At its centre is the Navitimer B09 Chronograph 41 Miles Davis, a 500-piece limited edition in stainless steel. Breitling is also producing just 50 exclusive box sets containing three versions of the watch in stainless steel, 18k yellow gold and platinum.

A Navitimer Inspired by Miles Davis

The new model takes its visual cues from the Navitimer Ref. 806 Mk 5, a reference known to have been worn by Miles Davis. Rather than turning the watch into an overt piece of celebrity memorabilia, Breitling has incorporated the connection through a series of discreet details while retaining the unmistakable character of the Navitimer.

The stainless-steel case measures 41 mm in diameter, matching the dimensions of the watch associated with Davis, while thickness is 13 mm and lug-to-lug measures 47.10 mm.

The familiar Navitimer dial architecture remains central to the design, including the slide-rule bezel that has defined the collection since its introduction in the 1950s. The predominantly black-and-cream colour scheme reinforces the vintage character, while cream-coloured lume provides a period-inspired appearance.

A particularly subtle detail is the Twin Jet logo, a historic Breitling emblem that adds another link to the brand’s aviation-era heritage.

The watch is rated to 30 metres of water resistance and is offered with either a calf-leather strap or a distinctive modern interpretation of Breitling’s Air Racer bracelet.

The Air Racer Bracelet Returns

The bracelet is one of the most distinctive elements of the new Miles Davis edition.

Inspired by Breitling’s historic Air Racer design, the modern bracelet features a perforated cuff-like construction with large circular openings. The design provides the watch with a distinctly retro-industrial appearance while differentiating it from the more conventional Navitimer bracelets.

Breitling has also incorporated hinged links close to the clasp, intended to improve flexibility and comfort on the wrist.

The movement operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) and combines a column wheel chronograph mechanism with a vertical clutch. It is also COSC-certified, confirming its chronometric performance through the independent Swiss testing organisation.

The choice of a hand-wound movement is particularly appropriate for a watch rooted in Breitling’s historical chronograph designs. It also allows the case to maintain the proportions and character expected from the Navitimer B09 family.

The 50-Piece Miles Davis Box Set

For collectors looking for something considerably rarer, Breitling has created a box set restricted to 50 examples.

The set brings together three executions of the Navitimer B09 Chronograph 41 Miles Davis. Alongside the stainless-steel model are an 18k yellow-gold version and a platinum version featuring a blue dial.

All three watches are fitted with calf-leather straps and matching folding clasps.

The presentation itself is designed as part of the experience. The watches are housed in a specially created display case inspired by a trumpet case, providing a direct visual connection to Davis’ musical legacy.

The box set also includes a particularly unusual benefit: lifetime membership to the forthcoming Breitling Social Club.

A Connection Beyond the Watch

The Miles Davis editions are also tied to Breitling’s plans for a new physical community concept, the Breitling Social Club.

The club is currently planned to open in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in late 2027, with the brand describing it as a meeting place for collectors, creatives, entrepreneurs, artists and Breitling enthusiasts.

Owners of the 500-piece stainless-steel Navitimer B09 Chronograph 41 Miles Davis will receive two years of membership, while purchasers of the 50-piece box set receive lifetime membership.

This gives the limited edition a broader connection to Breitling’s future brand strategy, while the watch itself remains firmly rooted in the company’s historical Navitimer design language.

Our Take

For us, the most attractive element of this release is undoubtedly the Air Racer-inspired steel bracelet. Its perforated design brings a strong vintage character to the Navitimer while giving the watch a more distinctive presence than the standard strap options.

Beyond its looks, however, we are particularly curious to experience it on the wrist. The cuff-like construction and hinged links around the clasp are designed with comfort in mind, but the bracelet’s unusual architecture raises an interesting question: how does it actually feel during extended wear?

It is certainly one of the elements of the Miles Davis edition that we would most like to experience firsthand.

Parmigiani Fleurier expands its Tonda PF collection with a new interpretation of its openworked sports watch, combining a precious rose gold case and bracelet with a deep Milano Blue treatment. Limited to just 30 pieces, the Tonda PF Skeleton Rose Gold Milano Blue brings together an integrated-bracelet design, an ultra-thin skeletonised movement and a more colourful approach to the traditionally restrained Tonda PF aesthetic.

The watch retains the refined proportions that define the Tonda PF Skeleton, with a 40 mm case measuring just 8.50 mm thick. Its construction combines polished and satin-brushed surfaces, while the finely knurled bezel provides one of the collection’s most recognisable details. The case is completed by Parmigiani Fleurier’s characteristic teardrop-shaped lugs and a 4.30 mm screw-down crown.

Despite its use of rose gold throughout the case and integrated bracelet, the watch maintains a distinctly sporty specification, including 100 metres of water resistance. The bracelet follows the contours of the case and is secured by a folding clasp, creating a continuous transition between the watch head and the wrist.

Skeletonised architecture in Milano Blue

The defining feature of this edition is the skeletonised dial and the colour treatment applied to the movement. The Milano Blue finish introduces a rich, dark blue tone into the openworked architecture, contrasting with the warm colour of the rose gold case and movement components.

Rather than simply placing a blue dial beneath the hands, the colour forms part of the skeletonised construction itself. The bridges feature a combination of sandblasted and satin-finished surfaces, creating different levels of texture and helping distinguish the individual components of the movement.

The open architecture exposes much of the mechanism from the front, with the applied 18k rose gold hour markers positioned above the movement. The skeletonised delta-shaped hands provide the familiar visual signature of the Tonda PF range while allowing the movement to remain the dominant feature of the dial.

A sapphire crystal protects the front of the watch, while a second sapphire crystal in the caseback provides another view of the movement and its finishing.

Manufacture calibre PF777

At the heart of the Tonda PF Skeleton Rose Gold Milano Blue is calibre PF777, Parmigiani Fleurier’s in-house automatic skeletonised movement.

Despite its complex openworked construction, the movement measures only 3.9mm in thickness, contributing to the watch’s overall 8.5mm profile. It operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz) and delivers approximately 60 hours of power reserve.

The movement’s architecture has been skeletonised to reveal its mechanical components from both sides. A particularly prominent element is the 22k rose gold openworked rotor, visible through the sapphire caseback and complementing the precious-metal construction of the watch.

The combination of the blue movement treatment, openworked bridges and rose gold components gives the calibre a strong three-dimensional appearance, with the finishing becoming an important part of the watch’s visual identity.

Swiss luxury watchmaker Vacheron Constantin has unveiled two new additions to its Overseas collection, presenting the Self-Winding 34.50 mm in stainless steel and 18K 5N pink gold. Designed for those who appreciate the versatility and sporty elegance of the Overseas in a more compact format, the latest references combine refined proportions, high-end finishing and the brand’s in-house automatic movement.

A Compact Interpretation of the Overseas

The new Overseas Self-Winding is housed in a 34.50 mm case with a thickness of just 9.30 mm, offering balanced proportions that suit a variety of wrist sizes while preserving the distinctive character of the collection. The watch retains the familiar three-part case construction, with a tonneau-shaped middle case topped by a circular plinth and the signature six-sided bezel inspired by the arms of Vacheron Constantin’s Maltese Cross emblem.

Like its larger siblings, the case showcases a sophisticated mix of finishes. The bezel is polished, the plinth features a circular satin-brushed finish, while the case and integrated bracelet combine vertically brushed upper surfaces with polished flanks that enhance the play of light. Despite its elegant profile, the watch remains highly practical, offering 150 metres of water resistance, a screw-down crown and sapphire crystals on both the front and back.

Two Distinct Dial Designs

The two references each bring a distinct personality to the collection.

The 18K pink gold version embraces a monochromatic aesthetic with a lacquered golden dial featuring a sunburst centre and a velvety-finished peripheral minute track. Applied pink gold hour markers and matching hands are filled with blue-emission Super-LumiNova, completing the warm and luxurious appearance.

In contrast, the stainless steel model pairs its case with a striking deep red lacquered dial. Originally introduced in 1975, the Laureato became Girard-Perregaux’s answer to the growing luxury sports watch segment, combining an integrated bracelet design with a distinctive octagonal bezel. Nearly five decades later, the collection remains one of the brand’s most recognizable lines, and this latest chronograph edition reinforces its sporty yet refined identity with a combination of stainless steel, rose gold, and a rich chocolate brown dial.

The watch features a 42 mm tonneau-shaped case crafted from 904L stainless steel, a more corrosion-resistant alloy compared to the commonly used 316L steel. The case measures 12.16 mm thick and offers 100 meters of water resistance, maintaining the sporty credentials expected from the Laureato collection.

Alternating brushed and polished surfaces emphasize the architectural design of the case, while the polished rose gold chronograph pushers and screw-down crown create a strong visual contrast.
