Breitling Refreshes The Chronomat Collection With Updated Design And New Automatic B31 40
Swiss watchmaker Breitling has introduced a refreshed version of its popular Chronomat collection, bringing updated case architecture, slimmer proportions, and a broader range of configurations to one of the brand’s most recognizable sports watches.

The renewed Chronomat family now includes 22 references spread across three main models: the Chronomat B01 42 chronograph, the new Chronomat Automatic B31 40, and the Chronomat Automatic 36. The latest evolution focuses on improved ergonomics, a more integrated design, and refined details while preserving the distinctive identity that has defined the Chronomat collection for decades.
A More Integrated Chronomat Design
The biggest visual change comes from the redesigned case construction. Breitling has moved away from the more traditional lug structure used on previous generations and replaced it with a more integrated, shrouded-lug design that flows directly into the signature Rouleaux bracelet. This new architecture gives the watches a smoother and more cohesive appearance while also enhancing comfort on the wrist. The revised silhouette introduces a more pronounced tonneau-inspired profile, reinforcing the sporty yet luxurious personality of the collection.

Breitling has also reduced the thickness across the lineup, improving wearability considerably. The Chronomat B01 42 chronograph now measures 13.77 mm thick, a noticeable reduction from the previous 15.10 mm profile, while the Chronomat Automatic 36 has been slimmed down to 9.68 mm. The bezel has also received subtle refinements, with the rider tabs now featuring softer contours that give the watches a cleaner and slightly dressier look.
Chronomat B01 42
The Chronomat B01 42 remains the flagship chronograph of the collection and continues to be powered by Breitling’s in-house Caliber B01 automatic chronograph movement. The watch preserves its familiar tri-compax layout, rotating bezel, and integrated bracelet while benefiting from the redesigned case and slimmer proportions. Stainless steel versions are available with white, blue, or green dials paired with contrasting black subdials, while two-tone stainless steel and red gold models come with a grey dial. Breitling also offers a full red gold version with a brown dial, alongside a stainless steel reference featuring a platinum bezel and ice blue dial.

Additional refinements can also be found on the dial side. The brand has removed the 1/100th scale previously present on the rehaut, simplifying the overall design, while the crown guards have been made slimmer and more elegant. Stainless steel and two-tone bracelet versions now include a toolless micro-adjustment system that allows for easier on-the-go sizing adjustments.

New Chronomat Automatic B31 40
One of the major highlights of the updated collection is the debut of the Chronomat Automatic B31 40, marking the first time Breitling has introduced a time-and-date Chronomat in a 40mm case size. The new model is powered by the Breitling Caliber B31 automatic movement, previously seen in the Top Time B31 and selected Superocean Heritage models.

The 40 mm dimensions position the watch as an especially versatile option within the collection, offering a balanced combination of sporty aesthetics and everyday wearability. Breitling offers the model in stainless steel with blue, green, or white dials, as well as a more premium version featuring a platinum bezel paired with an ice blue dial. Like the chronograph variants, the new B31 40 benefits from the updated integrated case design and slimmer overall profile.

The model range includes a classic stainless steel version with a blue dial, alongside more luxurious executions featuring white or grey mother-of-pearl dials with lab-grown diamond hour markers. Certain references also include diamond-set bezels, further emphasizing the watch’s elegant character.

Breitling additionally offers two-tone stainless steel and red gold versions, including models with white mother-of-pearl dials or brown dials combined with diamond-set bezels and diamond hour markers. Despite their more refined appearance, these watches still maintain the unmistakable Chronomat DNA through their integrated bracelet, rider-tab bezel, and sporty case profile.
