Chronographs are among the most mechanically expressive complications in watchmaking, translating elapsed time into a visual and tactile experience on the wrist. While most modern examples rely on multiple pushers to control their timing functions, earlier chronographs approached the task with far greater simplicity. Vulcain’s Monopusher Heritage revives this earlier solution, combining a historically accurate control system with a design language drawn directly from the mid-20th century.

The Monopusher Heritage takes inspiration from a Vulcain chronograph used in the 1950s as a match timer for Real Madrid, a connection that informs both its compact proportions and its restrained aesthetic. Introduced in 2023 with a black dial, the collection now expands with a panda dial variant that highlights the watch’s vintage layout while improving contrast and legibility.

At the heart of the watch is its defining technical feature: a monopusher chronograph mechanism. A single pusher, positioned at 2 o’clock, governs the entire chronograph sequence, allowing the wearer to start, stop, and reset the timing function through repeated presses. Unlike a flyback chronograph, the mechanism must be stopped before it can be reset, but the one-button configuration reflects early chronograph construction and enables intuitive, one-handed operation.

Case and Dimensions

The stainless steel case follows the established design of the Monopusher Heritage collection. It measures 38.90mm in diameter and 13mm in thickness, dimensions that align closely with mid-century chronographs while remaining well balanced on the wrist. A sapphire crystal protects the dial, while the solid screw-down case back contributes to a water resistance rating of 50 meters, providing everyday durability without compromising the watch’s vintage profile.

Panda Dial with Mid-Century Details

The panda dial introduces a white main surface paired with two black sub-dials arranged in a bi-compax layout. The 30-minute chronograph counter is positioned at 3 o’clock, with the small seconds display at 9 o’clock. Both registers feature a snailed finish and white railroad-style scales for precise reading. Black printed Arabic numerals mark the hours, while a peripheral seconds track frames the dial. The absence of a date window preserves symmetry and reinforces the period-correct appearance.

Leaf-shaped hour and minute hands add a refined, dress-oriented touch, contrasting with the functional chronograph layout. The central chronograph seconds hand stands out clearly against the light dial, ensuring legibility during timing operations.

A historically specific detail appears in the form of a pulsometer scale, positioned between the hour markers and the sub-dials. Calibrated for 30 heartbeats and marked in French, the pulsometer allows the wearer to measure heart rate by starting the chronograph and stopping it once 30 pulses have been counted.

Hand-Wound Mechanical Movement

Powering the Monopusher Heritage Panda is the hand-wound Sellita SW510 M MP b chronograph movement. The cam-operated caliber is configured for monopusher operation, runs at a frequency of 4 Hz, and offers a power reserve of approximately 58 hours. The manual-winding construction aligns with the watch’s vintage inspiration while contributing to a slimmer overall profile than an automatic chronograph would require.

Strap and Bracelet Options

Vulcain offers the Monopusher Heritage Panda with a range of strap and bracelet options, including black, brown, or gray leather straps secured with a pin buckle, a stainless steel bracelet, and a black alligator leather strap. These options allow the watch to adapt easily to different wearing contexts while maintaining its classic identity.

Price and Availability

The Monopusher Heritage Panda joins Vulcain’s permanent collection and is priced at € 2,990 when paired with leather straps. Versions fitted with the stainless steel bracelet retail for € 3,270, while the model delivered on a black alligator leather strap is priced at € 3,310. Alongside this standard panda configuration, Vulcain also introduces two limited editions of 50 pieces each: one with a salmon dial and another featuring a black dial with white silvery sub-dials.
