Louis Vuitton Monterey Ceramic: The Iconic Pebble-Shaped Watch Returns In Green And Black
Louis Vuitton is expanding the modern interpretation of one of its most distinctive vintage watches with the new Monterey Ceramic, bringing the design of the original 1988 model into the permanent collection.
Created by Italian architect and designer Gae Aulenti, the Monterey was notable for its unusual pebble-shaped case and unconventional construction. For the new generation, Louis Vuitton retains the essential character of the original while replacing its quartz architecture with an automatic mechanical movement and simplifying the dial.
Unlike the limited-edition Monterey introduced in 2025, the new Ceramic models are not restricted in production. They are offered in two versions, combining either black or green ceramic with a 37 mm case.
A 1980s Design Reinterpreted
The Monterey’s rounded silhouette remains its defining characteristic. The polished ceramic case measures 37 mm in diameter, preserving the relatively compact proportions of the original LV II, while its 11 mm thickness accommodates the modern automatic movement.

There are no conventional lugs. Instead, the unusual case construction incorporates a suspended caseback that allows the leather strap to pass directly through the watch, maintaining one of the most recognizable features of the original design.
At 12 o’clock, a steel crown provides a contrasting detail and is finished with a Clous de Paris pattern.
Two Ceramic Cases, Two Dial Personalities
The Monterey Ceramic is available in black and green ceramic, with each case paired with a different dial execution.
The black version uses a white dial with black and red markings, creating a high-contrast appearance. Red brass hour and minute hands are joined by a blue seconds hand, adding several small touches of colour to the otherwise monochrome composition.

The green model takes a more contemporary approach, using a matching green dial with white markings and striking yellow syringe-shaped hands. The combination creates a strong tone-on-tone effect while retaining the playful character associated with the Monterey.
Both dials are finished with lacquer and a final matte varnish, giving the surfaces a subtle texture. They differ from the grand feu enamel dial used for the 2025 Monterey, but their production still involves multiple firing stages. The markings are applied using acrylic stamping and fired after each layer, with the white version requiring an additional firing stage because of its two-colour decoration.
Automatic Mechanics
Inside the ceramic case is the LFTMA01.02 automatic calibre, replacing the quartz mechanism used by the original Monterey.

The move to mechanical watchmaking also explains the slightly greater thickness of the new models. Rather than attempting to reproduce every technical feature of the vintage watch, Louis Vuitton has concentrated on preserving its visual identity while giving the Monterey a contemporary mechanical foundation.
This approach also places the watch naturally within the broader watchmaking activities of La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton, where the brand has increasingly developed its own mechanical and decorative expertise.
A Distinctive Caseback
The rear of the Monterey Ceramic is perhaps as unusual as its front.

The case retains the characteristic suspended construction of the original, with the strap passing underneath the case rather than attaching through conventional lugs. This creates a very clean silhouette and allows the rounded case to remain visually uninterrupted.
The construction is an important part of what makes the Monterey different from a conventional 37 mm watch: its identity comes as much from the relationship between case and strap as from the dial itself.
From Limited Edition to Permanent Collection
The new Monterey Ceramic follows the 2025 Monterey revival, but represents a different strategy for the model. Rather than another small numbered release, the Ceramic references become part of the Louis Vuitton permanent collection.

The decision also brings the design closer to the proportions of the original LV II, while the ceramic construction, automatic movement and simplified dials give it a distinctly modern interpretation.
The Louis Vuitton Monterey Ceramic is priced at € 23,000 and is available through Louis Vuitton boutiques.
