Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambra Collection Reimagined In Translucent Enamel
Van Cleef & Arpels recently welcomed guests in Lisbon for a morning dedicated to jewellery craftsmanship, knowledge and one of the Maison’s most recognisable creations: the Alhambra collection.
The morning began with a L’ÉCOLE Talk, presented by representatives of L’ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts – the Van Cleef & Arpels school dedicated to teaching and transmitting knowledge related to jewellery and the arts of jewellery-making. The presentation was followed by a visit to the Van Cleef & Arpels boutique on Avenida da Liberdade, where guests had the opportunity to discover the Maison’s latest Alhambra creations.
The highlight was a new interpretation of the iconic collection featuring translucent pink enamel, introducing a subtle yet captivating dimension to the familiar four-leaf clover motif.
A L’ÉCOLE Talk: Discovering the World of Jewellery Arts
Before turning our attention to the new collection, the morning began with a L’ÉCOLE Talk focused on the world of jewellery and the knowledge behind its creation.
Founded by Van Cleef & Arpels, L’ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts is dedicated to sharing and transmitting jewellery-making knowledge. Through its educational programmes and talks, the school explores not only jewellery techniques, but also the history, culture and craftsmanship that have shaped the art of jewellery over centuries.
This provided an especially fitting introduction to the presentation that followed. Behind every finished jewellery creation lies a combination of specialised knowledge, materials, techniques and craftsmanship, elements that can sometimes be overlooked when admiring the final object.
The L’ÉCOLE Talk offered an opportunity to look beyond the finished pieces and gain a deeper appreciation for the expertise that defines the world of fine jewellery.
From L’ÉCOLE to Alhambra
The morning continued at the Van Cleef & Arpels boutique on Avenida da Liberdade, where attention turned to the Maison’s latest creations.
At the centre of the presentation was the Alhambra collection.
First introduced in 1968, Alhambra has become one of Van Cleef & Arpels’ most recognisable signatures. Its four-leaf clover-inspired motif has been revisited over the decades through different precious stones, materials and colours, while retaining its instantly recognisable silhouette.
For this latest interpretation, Van Cleef & Arpels introduces translucent pink enamel, creating a particularly delicate and dynamic version of the iconic motif.
The Changing Character of Translucent Enamel
The real appeal of the new creations becomes particularly apparent when they are seen in person.
Unlike opaque enamel, the translucent material allows light to interact with the surface and the background behind it. This means that the colour can subtly change depending on the surroundings.
At certain angles, the pink appears light and delicate, while against a darker background it can become noticeably deeper, revealing richer reddish tones.
This changing appearance gives the jewellery a sense of movement even when the piece itself remains perfectly still.
During our hands-on experience, this was especially evident with the bracelet. Picking it up and viewing the individual Alhambra motifs from different angles revealed how much the translucent enamel contributes to the overall character of the piece.
It is a detail that is difficult to fully appreciate through photographs alone.

One of the strengths of the Alhambra collection has always been its ability to accommodate different interpretations without losing its identity.

For us, the Lisbon presentation offered an opportunity to experience these creations at close range and appreciate a detail that is central to their character: the way translucent enamel transforms the colour of the Alhambra motif according to its surroundings.
The morning’s progression from the L’ÉCOLE Talk to the boutique also created a natural connection between the knowledge behind jewellery-making and the finished creations themselves.
In the new translucent pink enamel Alhambra pieces, Van Cleef & Arpels once again demonstrates how a subtle change in material can give a familiar icon an entirely different presence — allowing light, colour and transparency to become part of the design itself.
