Doxa celebrates the legacy of renowned author and underwater explorer Clive Cussler with the launch of the new Sub 300 Ti5 Clive Cussler, a limited edition that combines the brand’s iconic dive watch design with lightweight Grade 5 titanium construction and subtle tributes to the man whose fictional hero, Dirk Pitt, famously wore a Doxa Sub.
Produced in just 300 individually numbered pieces, the watch marks what would have been Cussler’s 95th birthday while also reinforcing Doxa’s long-standing relationship with NUMA (National Underwater and Marine Agency), the non-profit organization founded by the author to locate and preserve historic shipwrecks.
A Classic Dive Watch Reimagined in Titanium
The new edition retains the unmistakable silhouette of the Sub 300, first introduced in 1967 as a professional-grade dive watch designed for recreational divers. Its distinctive cushion-shaped case, oversized decompression bezel and highly legible display remain faithful to the original, while the extensive use of Grade 5 titanium gives the watch a more contemporary character.
The case measures 42.50 mm in diameter, 45 mm lug-to-lug, 13.40 mm thick, and features a 20 mm lug width. Both the screw-down crown and screw-in case back are also crafted from titanium, contributing to a lighter overall weight without compromising durability.
Protecting the dial is a box-shaped sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating that recalls the domed acrylic crystals fitted to vintage Sub 300 models. Water resistance remains a professional-ready 300 meters.
Innovative Titanium Sandwich Dial
One of the standout features of the watch is its unique two-layer titanium dial. Instead of a conventional painted dial, Doxa uses two sandblasted Grade 5 titanium plates stacked together.
The lower layer carries the luminous hour markers, while the upper plate features precisely laser-cut openings that reveal the markers beneath, creating a subtle sandwich construction with added depth. The same concept extends to the minute track and date window, giving the dial a distinctive three-dimensional appearance while preserving the clean, highly legible aesthetic expected from a professional dive watch.
Orange accents remain an essential part of the design, including the brand’s signature oversized minute hand, ensuring excellent underwater readability.
Subtle Tributes to Clive Cussler
Rather than incorporating obvious commemorative graphics, Doxa opted for discreet details that reference Clive Cussler throughout the watch.
The date wheel highlights the numbers 7, 15 and 31 in orange, representing the author’s birthday—July 15, 1931. Turning the watch over reveals a titanium case back engraved with the NUMA emblem, the watch’s individual limited-edition number and its COSC Chronometer certification.
As with previous Clive Cussler editions, part of the proceeds from sales will support NUMA’s ongoing maritime archaeological work.
Professional Diving Credentials
The Sub 300 Ti5 Clive Cussler retains one of Doxa’s most recognizable technical features: the brand’s patented unidirectional rotating bezel with dual scales.
The outer orange scale displays diving depth, while the inner black scale indicates dive time, allowing divers to reference the historical US Navy no-decompression limits directly from the bezel.
Visibility in low-light conditions is ensured by generous applications of Super-LumiNova on the hands, hour markers and diving indications.
The watch is paired with a black Dive Flex rubber strap, featuring a perforated Tropic-inspired design that echoes the vintage straps commonly seen on dive watches from the late 1960s.
COSC-Certified Automatic Movement
Powering the watch is the reliable Sellita SW200-1 automatic movement, operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz) and offering approximately 38 hours of power reserve.
The movement is COSC-certified, guaranteeing chronometer-level precision and reinforcing the watch’s professional credentials.
