TAG Heuer Monza Flyback Chronograph Returns In Forged Carbon

The TAG Heuer Monza is one of the most distinctive names in the brand’s motorsport-inspired history, and its connection to Formula 1 dates back to the 1970s. For its latest iteration, TAG Heuer brings the Monza Flyback Chronograph back in a lightweight forged-carbon case, combining the model’s traditionally dark aesthetic with a series of vivid red details.

The timing is particularly appropriate, with Formula 1 returning to Monza, the iconic Italian circuit closely associated with Ferrari and one of the sport’s most historic venues.

A Formula 1-inspired design

The Monza was introduced in 1976 to commemorate Ferrari’s success in Formula 1, when the Scuderia secured both the Constructors’ and Drivers’ World Championships. The watch became closely associated with Niki Lauda, who won the Drivers’ Championship that year.

While the original Monza had a distinctive cushion-shaped design and a much more colourful dial, the contemporary interpretation retains the fundamental black-and-red identity while adopting a considerably more technical construction.

Its 42 mm case measures 15.22 mm thick and is made from forged carbon. The material provides the watch with a combination of low weight and high structural rigidity, while also giving every case a slightly individual appearance through the random pattern created during the forging process.

The black theme continues through the Grade 2 titanium caseback, finished in black DLC, while the chronograph pushers are made from black DLC-coated steel. At 3 o’clock, the carbon crown provides another lightweight element to the construction.

A modern chronograph layout

The dial takes a predominantly black approach, with red used selectively to highlight the watch’s motorsport character.

Red accents appear on the chronograph and minute-counting hands, as well as around the pulsometer and tachymeter scales. A red flyback indication at 6 o’clock provides another visual reference to the chronograph’s principal function.

The layout differs substantially from the historical Monza, with the date positioned at 9 o’clock in an angled aperture. Running seconds occupy the 6 o’clock position, creating a balanced arrangement across the dial.

The hour markers are printed rather than applied, while the hands and markers are treated with white Super-LumiNova for improved legibility in low-light conditions.

The combination of tachymeter and pulsometer scales also reinforces the Monza’s original purpose as a watch designed around speed, timing and motorsport.

Flyback functionality

At the heart of the watch is the automatic Calibre TH20-12, a COSC-certified chronograph movement operating at 4Hz and offers up to 80 hours of power reserve.

Its flyback function allows the chronograph to be reset and immediately restarted with a single operation, rather than requiring the user to stop, reset and restart the chronograph sequentially. It is a particularly useful feature for repeated timing intervals and fits naturally with the Monza’s motorsport heritage.

The movement is also visible through the sapphire crystal caseback. TAG Heuer has carried the red-and-black colour scheme onto the rear of the watch, with red lettering on the rotor and a striking red column wheel visible beneath it.

Lightweight construction with contrasting details

The use of forged carbon extends beyond aesthetics. Combined with the Grade 2 titanium caseback, the material selection helps keep the overall construction relatively light despite the substantial 42mm dimensions and chronograph architecture.

The caseback is secured to the mid-case with screws and carries the individual numbering of each watch, highlighting its limited-edition status.

The carbon crown at 3 o’clock represents another departure from the original Monza, whose crown position was located at 9 o’clock. This more conventional arrangement contributes to the contemporary character of the watch while preserving its distinctive asymmetric visual identity through the chronograph pushers.

Limited to 500 pieces

TAG Heuer is producing the new Monza Flyback Chronograph as a limited edition of just 500 individually numbered watches.

With its forged-carbon case, COSC-certified automatic flyback chronograph, 80-hour-class movement architecture and combination of black, red and white details, the new Monza brings together several elements that have defined TAG Heuer’s motorsport watches for decades.
