Straum Expedition: A Norwegian Tool Watch Built For The Outdoors

Norwegian independent watchmaker Straum is taking its design language in a more utilitarian direction with the new Expedition, its first purpose-built tool watch. While previous models such as the Jan Mayen and Frozen Metal have translated Norwegian landscapes into highly textured dials, the Expedition focuses on another aspect of the brand’s philosophy: creating a watch designed to withstand the demands of the outdoors.

Compact Titanium Case

At its core is a redesigned titanium case measuring 38.20 mm in diameter, slightly more compact than the 38.70 mm Jan Mayen Titanium. The reduction is accompanied by a new stepped bezel, which gives the case a more rugged appearance while reducing the amount of exposed surface around the crystal. The design also helps deflect impacts away from the sapphire crystal, reinforcing the watch’s practical character.

Titanium is particularly appropriate for a watch intended for harsh environments. Besides keeping the weight down, the material has relatively low thermal conductivity and thermal expansion. For a watch designed with Norway’s cold conditions in mind, that means less heat is transferred between the wrist and case, while the metal is also less affected by significant temperature changes.

Designed for Cold Conditions

The oversized crown at 3 o’clock is another practical detail. Its larger proportions are intended to make winding and setting easier when wearing gloves or when hands are affected by cold weather.

A Norwegian Landscape on the Caseback

Turning the watch over reveals another significant change. Instead of an exhibition caseback, the Expedition uses a solid titanium caseback, reinforcing its tool-watch credentials. It is decorated with an engraved scene depicting a lone hiker overlooking a Norwegian landscape beneath a star-filled sky, with Straum’s “S” logo taking the place of the moon.

A Dial Built Around Legibility

The dial is equally focused on legibility. A 60-minute scale runs around the flange, while large hour markers provide an immediately readable display. Arabic numerals mark 12, 3, 6 and 9, with a 24-hour scale positioned closer to the centre. A date aperture sits above 6 o’clock, using highly visible Fluor Orange numerals.

Three Dial Configurations

Straum is offering three dial configurations. The Launch Edition, limited to 200 pieces, features a blue dial with nickel-plated hands and Super-LumiNova-filled hour markers. The regular collection comprises a grey Titanium dial and a White Lume version. The latter takes a particularly distinctive approach, using a fully luminous dial contrasted by black hour markers.

Across all three versions, the seconds hand receives a Fluor Orange tip, adding a bright functional accent to the otherwise restrained palette. The core models use black hour and minute hands, while the Launch Edition combines its blue dial with nickel-plated hands.

La Joux-Perret G100

Powering the Expedition is the La Joux-Perret G100, an automatic calibre offering a substantial 68-hour power reserve. It also provides the watch with its date function and belongs to the same movement family found in the Jan Mayen collection.

Strap, Bracelet and Pricing

The Expedition is available either on a rubber strap or a titanium bracelet. Pricing starts at € 2,100 on rubber and rises to € 2,360 on the titanium bracelet, excluding applicable taxes, VAT and duties.
