Stowa Flieger Original: A Faithful Tribute To Aviation History
Stowa, the renowned German watchmaker with nearly a century of history, has unveiled a faithful recreation of its legendary Flieger Original. As one of the five esteemed brands selected to produce B-Uhren pilot’s watches for the Luftwaffe during World War II—alongside A. Lange & Söhne, Wempe, Laco, and Swiss watchmaker IWC—Stowa continues to honor its rich heritage with this latest release.
The new Stowa Flieger Original stays true to its roots with a robust 42mm stainless steel case featuring a bead-blasted finish. With a thickness of 13.50mm and a lug-to-lug measurement of 52.30mm, the watch makes a commanding presence on the wrist, just as the original models were designed to be worn over a flight jacket. It features a sapphire crystal, a smooth bezel, and a signature onion-shaped crown at 3 o’clock, enhancing both aesthetics and functionality. As a nod to its historical significance, buyers can opt for an engraving of the reference “FI 23883” on the left side of the case. The timepiece also boasts a screw-down open case back and 100 meters of water resistance, ensuring durability and practicality.
The dial embraces the traditional Type A pilot’s watch layout with a matte black background, highly legible Arabic numerals, and a distinctive triangle flanked by two dots at 12 o’clock. A white minute and seconds track runs along the edge, complementing the blue sword-shaped hands. Every marker and hand is generously coated with Super-LumiNova, ensuring exceptional readability in low-light conditions. True to the historical design, the Stowa Flieger Original omits any branding on the dial, preserving the purity of its aviation heritage.
Through the exhibition case back, the manual-winding Unitas Caliber 6498-1 is visible, featuring 18 jewels and a center seconds hand. Operating at a frequency of 18,000 vibrations per hour, the movement delivers an impressive 46-hour power reserve. The finely decorated movement showcases brushed stripes, chamfered edges on the bridges, heat-blued screws, and gilded wheels and engravings, emphasizing Stowa’s commitment to craftsmanship.
To complete the package, Stowa offers three strap options: a traditional riveted leather strap in brown or black, staying true to classic pilot’s watch aesthetics, or a contemporary Milanese-style steel bracelet for a modern touch. The Stowa Flieger Original is priced at €2,990, delivering an authentic pilot’s watch experience rooted in historical significance and expert watchmaking.
