Seventy Years Later The Longines Flagship Is Back
First launched in the late 1950s, the Longines Flagship now appears as part of the brand’s Heritage collection and in the form of three iterations.
The new Longines Flagship Heritage Moon Phase comes with a domed dial with applied hour markers, faceted dauphine hands filled with Super-LumiNova and a sub-dial at 6 o’clock that includes a moon phase aperture and a date pointer, radiates the class and elegance that we usually only find in other premium brands.
It’s the 38.5mm by 12.4mm stainless steel case that houses the new Flagship that comes with a smooth bezel and polished finish, fluted crown at 3 o’clock, sapphire glass front, 30m water resistance and solid case back with a central gold medallion embossed with a caravel, symbol of the Flash Heritage collection.
As for the variants they are three as already announced, one displays a silver dial with gilt accents and comes with a brown alligator strap, another comes with a sunburst silver dial with silver accents attached to a grey alligator strap and finally one with a sunburst blue dial with silver accents and a matching alligator strap.
Inside is the automatic movement Caliber L.899.5 based on the ETA A31.L91 that runs, reaching 25,200 Vph and offering up to 72 hours of power reserve.
The new Longines Flagship Heritage Moon Phase are already available in official brand boutiques and authorized retailers and any one of them can be purchased for €3,350.
Our Opinion
The brand’s latest releases make it clear that size 38 is the new gold and we, like many others, can only applaud. However, every rose has a thorn, and its 12.4mm thickness seems almost incomprehensible, making the task of wearing the distinctive and beautiful watch under a sleeve a challenge. We know that most of the time the height of the cases is associated with the dimensions of the movement, but here and only based on the photos it seems that the distance that separates the dial from the sapphire crystal appears to be too long, although we recognize that it could be a matter of an optical illusion produced by the domed dial.
Among the three variants, our choice leans more towards the two with a silver dial due to their versatility.
