Seiko’s Modern Take On The Classic ‘Pogue’ Chronograph
The Seiko “Pogue” is back through the reinterpretation of the 1969 Speedtimer through the new Seiko Prospex Solar Chronograph SSC947P1 that has just arrived.
It was during the 1970s that the North American NASA astronaut Colonel William Pogue took a Seiko 6139 on his wrist to the Skylab mission, the first US Space Station, which would become the first automatic chronograph to travel in space, from then on it was known by the nickname “Pogue”.
Just like the original “Pogue”, the new reference features a crisp yellow dial, rectangular applied hour markers and faceted hands, two red chronograph hands and a red-blue tachymeter bezel.
The new Seiko wears a round steel case instead of the previous Tonneau-shaped one which features a brushed finish, with dimensions of 41.40mm in diameter, 13mm in thickness and 45.90mm in length. Curved sapphire crystal, bi-colour aluminium fixed bezel, fluted crown at 3 o’clock flanked by two pushers, solid case back and 100m of water resistance.
The Panda dial comes with a sunburst effect, featuring three black registers complete with a 24-hour indicator, 60-minute counter with a power reserve indicator and running seconds at 3-6-9 o’clock respectively, a square date window with a white background at 4:30, Dauphine hands that, like the vintage-style hour markers, come filled with Lumibrite and finally, a black chapter ring with a second track that works in partnership with the chronograph centre seconds hand.
Inside it is powered by the solar-powered V192 quartz movement, which when fully recharged offers 6 months of energy, presenting an incredible accuracy of +/- 15 seconds per month.
The watch arrives attached to a 3-row tapered steel bracelet with a folding clasp which hits the market with a price tag of £600.
