Seiko x Initial D: The RX-7 FD3S Chronograph For Collectors

Seiko has returned to the world of Japanese pop culture with a new limited-edition chronograph created in collaboration with Initial D, the iconic manga and anime series centred on street racing and the cars that defined Japan’s tuning culture.

This latest release takes its inspiration from Keisuke Takahashi, one of the series’ best-known characters, and his distinctive Mazda RX-7 FD3S. Rather than simply adding character graphics to an existing watch, Seiko has incorporated several visual details intended to connect the chronograph with Takahashi, his RedSuns racing team and the rotary-powered sports car.

Interestingly, beyond its anime and automotive appeal, the model also presents itself as a considerably more accessible alternative to the recently launched Tudor Black Bay Chrono 39 “Bumblebee”, while offering a similarly striking yellow-and-black aesthetic and an even more exclusive production run.

Compact Steel Case

The watch is housed in a 39.80 mm stainless steel case measuring 12.80 mm thick and 47 mm from lug to lug. Its predominantly brushed finish reinforces the sporty character of the model while keeping the polished surfaces to a minimum.

A fixed black bezel surrounds the dial and features a tachymeter scale, adding another direct connection to the watch’s motorsport-inspired identity. At 3 o’clock, a fluted crown is positioned between protective crown guards, accompanied by two chronograph pushers that control the timing functions.

The dial is protected by a Hardlex crystal, while the reverse of the case is closed by a solid screwed case back. Together with the case construction, this provides the watch with 100 metres of water resistance, making it suitable for everyday wear beyond its obvious motorsport and collector appeal.

Yellow Panda Dial

The strongest visual element is undoubtedly the yellow dial, which draws inspiration from the distinctive yellow Mazda RX-7 FD3S driven by Keisuke Takahashi.

Seiko uses a classic tri-compax chronograph layout, with a running seconds sub-dial positioned at 6 o’clock, a 60-minute counter at 12 o’clock and a 12-hour counter at 9 o’clock. All three sub-dials feature black backgrounds, creating the characteristic “Panda” contrast against the yellow base.

A date aperture is positioned at 4:30 and follows the same black-background treatment as the chronograph counters. This helps integrate the calendar into the overall design without disrupting the visual balance of the dial.

Red accents on the sub-dial markings provide another reference to the RX-7’s dashboard, while the RedSuns team emblem appears at 3 o’clock. At 12 o’clock, the design incorporates a subtle reference to the rotary engine that powers the iconic Mazda.

The result is a dial where the Initial D references are integrated into the functional elements of the chronograph rather than relying solely on overt character imagery.

Seiko Meca-Quartz Movement

Powering the watch is the Seiko 8T67 Meca-Quartz movement, a hybrid quartz calibre combining the precision and practicality of a quartz timekeeping system with a mechanical module dedicated to the chronograph mechanism.

The movement operates at 32,768 Hz and provides an approximately three-year battery life, making it a practical choice for a watch designed primarily for everyday use and occasional chronograph timing.

The Meca-Quartz architecture also gives the chronograph operation a more mechanical character than a conventional quartz chronograph, while retaining the low-maintenance advantages associated with battery-powered movements.

Three-Link Steel Bracelet

The watch is paired with a three-link stainless steel bracelet, maintaining the predominantly metallic and automotive character of the design.

A folding clasp secures the bracelet to the wrist, completing what is otherwise a relatively straightforward sports-watch configuration.

1,995 Pieces for an Initial D Milestone

The connection with Initial D goes beyond the aesthetics. Seiko will produce exactly 1,995 individually numbered examples, corresponding to the year the original manga series debuted.

Each watch is supplied in a dedicated presentation box designed specifically for the collaboration. The exterior follows the same bright-yellow colour scheme as the RX-7, while the Initial D logo and RedSuns emblem feature on the lid.

Inside, the presentation continues the automotive theme with a full-colour illustration depicting Keisuke Takahashi alongside his Mazda RX-7 FD3S.

The limited production makes this a particularly interesting proposition for collectors, especially considering that the watch combines three distinct areas of Japanese enthusiast culture: Seiko watchmaking, Initial D and the Mazda RX-7.

A Watch Built Around Japanese Car Culture

The Seiko x Initial D Keisuke Takahashi RX-7 FD3S is more than a conventional anime-branded watch. Its proportions, chronograph configuration and practical Meca-Quartz movement make it a fully functional sports chronograph, while the yellow-and-black colour scheme and carefully placed details establish the connection with Takahashi’s RX-7.

For Initial D fans, the references to the RedSuns, rotary engine and FD3S provide plenty of details to discover. For watch enthusiasts, the 39.80 mm case, tachymeter bezel, tri-compax layout and 100-metre water resistance give the model a specification sheet that works independently of the collaboration.

Limited to just 1,995 individually numbered examples, it also has the production scarcity expected from a dedicated collector’s edition.

The Seiko x Initial D Keisuke Takahashi RX-7 FD3S is expected to launch in Japan through Premico at the end of January, with a retail price of approximately USD 418 at the time of announcement. International availability has not been confirmed.
