Seiko SPB499: A Masterclass In Urushi Lacquer Dial Craftsmanship
Drawing inspiration from centuries-old Japanese craftsmanship, Seiko unveils the SPB499—a new addition to the Presage Classic Series that brings the timeless elegance of urushi lacquer to the modern wrist. This latest release seamlessly fuses traditional artistry with refined watchmaking, offering a rich tribute to Japan’s cultural heritage.

Case and Dimensions: Contemporary Proportions with Traditional Elegance
Encased in stainless steel with Seiko’s proprietary super-hard coating, the SPB499 balances modern wrist presence with refined aesthetics. It measures 40.20 mm in diameter, 48 mm lug-to-lug, and 12.10 mm in thickness—dimensions that offer a versatile fit while remaining suitable for more formal settings. A dual-curved sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating ensures clarity, and the transparent caseback allows a look into the movement inside. With 100 meters of water resistance, the watch is as practical as it is sophisticated.

Dial: Traditional Urushi Lacquer Craftsmanship
The standout feature of the SPB499 is undeniably its black urushi lacquer dial. Created by hand using sap from the urushi tree, the lacquer is applied in multiple layers and polished repeatedly to achieve its signature depth and gloss. This age-old technique results in a dial with a lustrous, mirror-like finish, rich in texture and almost liquid in appearance.

Accenting the dial are steel gold-plated hour markers and printings, along with leaf-shaped hour and minute hands that feature a grained texture, enhancing legibility while preserving a classic aesthetic. A 24-hour subdial at 6 o’clock adds a subtle complication that complements the clean layout.
Movement: Calibre 6R5H with 72-Hour Power Reserve
Powering the SPB499 is Seiko’s calibre 6R5H, an automatic movement operating at 21,600 vibrations per hour (3Hz) and offering a power reserve of approximately 72 hours. While Seiko lists the daily accuracy range as +25 to -15 seconds, many wearers report better performance in real-world conditions. The exhibition caseback reveals a gold-colored rotor and a clean, functional finish typical of Seiko’s mid-range mechanical movements.
Strap and Availability
The watch is paired with a black leather strap, secured with a three-fold clasp for everyday ease and comfort. The SPB499 is not a limited edition and will become part of Seiko’s permanent Presage lineup. Availability is set for July 2025, with a retail price of € 1,750.
