Seiko Presents The SPB411 Inspired By The ‘Navigator Timer’ From The 60s
The new Seiko SPB 411, which joins the Prospex Land Series GMT line, is a modern recreation of the ‘Navigator Timer’ mountain watch from the 60s, which was the brand’s first watch to come equipped with a rotating bezel and a second-time zone.
Born in 1968 under the reference 6117 and called the Navigator Timer, it was the first Seiko watch with a dual-timer function to come equipped with a 24-hour rotating bezel.
The Seiko Navigator Timer was a tool watch that was primarily used by mountain explorers. The watch was housed in a C-shaped steel case featuring a 24-hour rotating bezel that, together with an extra central hand on the dial, provided the time in a second geographic zone.
The new SPB411, which is now part of the Prospex Land Series GMT line, leaves behind the original name that was previously proudly painted on the dial but presents a design very similar to the original.
On the outside it once again embraces the same C-shaped case whose measurements are faithful to the original, measuring 38.50 mm in diameter by 45.20 mm lug-to-lug distance, which features a brushed finish. Rotating bezel with a black engraved scale and a pip-lume at 24h mark. Boxed sapphire crystal, underneath crown at 4 o’clock, screwed solid case back and the current 100m of water resistance that replaces the old 70m.
Like the case, the dial remains faithful to its roots, featuring a sunray grey background, polished applied hour markers, and faceted hands filled with LumiBrite matching the dots-lumed on the angular black chapter ring. A red GMT hand, a date window at 3 o’clock and the applied brand’s lettering at noon followed by the ‘Automatic’ inscription referring to the movement and the two lines of text at 6 o’clock mentioning the watertightness.
At its heart beats the modern 6R54 automatic movement that can reach 21,600 Vph and offer up to 3 days of power reserve.
The watch, which comes attached to a 5-link steel bracelet with a three-fold clasp, arrives in November limited to 4,000 units and priced at USD 1,500.
