Seiko Presage SPB537: A Tonneau Case Returns To The Collection

Seiko expands the Presage lineup with the SPB537, marking the return of a tonneau-shaped case that had been absent from the collection for several years. While Seiko has explored this form in the past, the SPB537 represents a renewed approach, pairing a shaped case with an enamel dial and a modern in-house automatic movement. The result is a watch that leans strongly on classical design codes while benefiting from contemporary construction.

Case design and proportions

The Seiko Presage SPB537 features a stainless steel tonneau-shaped case measuring 35.90 mm in width, 46 mm lug-to-lug, and 12.50 mm in thickness. Despite its modest nominal diameter, the curved profile and extended lugs give the watch a more substantial presence on the wrist than the measurements might suggest.

A narrow bezel surrounds a dual-curved sapphire crystal, while the mid-case incorporates short, sculpted lugs that add visual depth. The case sides are softly contoured, creating a smooth transition between the bezel and case back. A conical crown at 3 o’clock, a familiar Presage signature, completes the design.

The case is rated to 5 bar (50 meters) of water resistance.

Enamel dial with classical detailing

The dial is the visual centerpiece of the SPB537. Crafted in white enamel, it offers a glossy surface that contrasts sharply with the black Roman numerals marking the hours. A traditional railroad-style minute track runs along the outer edge, reinforcing the watch’s historical inspiration.

Blue, leaf-shaped hands indicate the hours and minutes, adding a refined touch of color against the white dial. The central seconds hand features a crescent moon-shaped counterweight, a subtle detail that enhances the watch’s classical character. At 6 o’clock, a 24-hour sub-dial is styled to resemble a small seconds register, contributing to a balanced and symmetrical layout.

The dial layout draws inspiration from the Seiko Timekeeper, the brand’s first pocket watch introduced in 1895. Text on the dial includes the Seiko logo, Presage branding, and indications for “Automatic” and “3 Days.”

Caliber 6R5H movement

Powering the Presage SPB537 is Seiko’s in-house automatic Caliber 6R5H. The movement operates at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour and delivers a power reserve of approximately 72 hours when fully wound.

Seiko states an accuracy range of +25 to -15 seconds per day, which is consistent with other models in the 6R family. The movement can be viewed through a sapphire display case back, revealing a gold-toned rotor and utilitarian finishing focused on durability rather than decoration.

Bracelet and wearability

The SPB537 is supplied on a stainless steel five-row bracelet, combining brushed and polished surfaces for a refined yet versatile look. The bracelet is secured by a push-button folding clasp. While it does not feature micro-adjustment or quick-release functionality, the standard spring bar construction allows for easy replacement with leather or fabric straps.

Price and availability

The Seiko Presage SPB537 is priced at € 1,650 and is positioned within Seiko’s mid-tier Presage offerings, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern mechanical specifications.

Our Take

We welcome the return of the tonneau-shaped case to the Presage collection. It adds variety to a lineup that has become increasingly dominated by round cases and reinforces Seiko’s long-standing interest in shaped dress watches. That said, it would be interesting to see Seiko explore slightly smaller dimensions—sizes that remain elegant and refined without becoming overly exclusive to women’s wrists, and that would also suit men with more modest wrist sizes.
