Seiko Introduces Two Limited Astron GPS Solar Models With Star-Inspired Dials
Seiko expands its Astron GPS Solar collection with two new limited-edition references, the Astron GPS Solar Dual-Time Chronograph SSH187 and the Astron GPS Solar SSJ039. Both watches are based on established Astron platforms and introduce a newly developed dial inspired by a star-filled night sky, combined with a fully black-coated titanium case and bracelet.
Rather than debuting new technology, these releases focus on design refinement while retaining the advanced GPS Solar functionality that has defined the Astron line since its introduction.
A Star-Inspired Dial with a Technical Foundation
Both models feature a new embossed dial with a spiral pattern radiating outward from the center. Finished in a dark turquoise tone, the surface incorporates a subtle glitter effect intended to evoke swirling stars in space. Despite the layered texture, legibility remains a priority thanks to applied hour markers, well-defined hands, and clearly separated indications.

The galaxy-inspired theme fits naturally within the Astron concept, as the collection relies on satellite connectivity to automatically adjust the time anywhere in the world. The watches are housed in black hard-coated titanium cases and bracelets, a finish chosen to enhance scratch resistance while giving the familiar Astron design a darker and more uniform appearance.
Seiko Astron GPS Solar Dual-Time Chronograph SSH187
The SSH187 is built on Seiko’s larger Astron GPS Solar chronograph architecture and features a 43.30 mm titanium case. The lightweight construction is paired with a dual-curved sapphire crystal and a water-resistance rating of 10 bar, making the watch suitable for daily wear. The bracelet is equipped with Seiko’s Smart Adjuster clasp system, allowing for quick and precise sizing adjustments.

Powering the watch is Seiko’s caliber 5X83, a GPS Solar chronograph movement designed for frequent travelers. The movement automatically synchronizes the time via GPS signals and allows the wearer to switch time zones at the push of a button. It also incorporates a dual-time display, a chronograph function, a perpetual calendar that remains accurate until February 28, 2100, independent hour-hand adjustment, and a power-saving mode when the watch is not exposed to light. The dial further displays satellite reception status, including confirmation of GPS connection and the number of satellites used for positioning, with a minimum of four required to determine the current time zone.
Visually, the spiral-textured turquoise dial is complemented by a matching turquoise accent ring on the bezel, creating contrast against the black-coated case and bracelet. The Seiko Astron SSH187 is produced in a limited edition of 1,500 pieces and is priced at € 3,000.
Seiko Astron GPS Solar SSJ039
The SSJ039 offers a more streamlined interpretation of the Astron GPS Solar concept and is housed in a 41.20 mm titanium case finished with the same black hard coating. Like the chronograph model, it features a sapphire crystal, a water-resistance rating of 10 bar, and a bracelet fitted with Seiko’s Smart Adjuster clasp.

Inside the SSJ039 is Seiko’s caliber 3X62, a GPS Solar movement focused on time and date functionality. The movement provides automatic satellite-based time correction, a perpetual calendar accurate until February 28, 2100, and a power reserve of up to six months when fully charged. It also includes indicators on the dial that display GPS signal reception and satellite connection status for quick time adjustments.
With fewer complications than the SSH187, the dial layout of the SSJ039 allows the spiral galaxy texture and turquoise coloration to take center stage, making the glitter effect slightly more noticeable under changing light conditions. This model is also limited to 1,500 pieces and carries a retail price of € 2,500.
Positioning Within the Astron Collection
With the SSH187 and SSJ039, Seiko reinforces the Astron collection’s emphasis on precision, autonomy, and global usability while introducing a more expressive visual identity. The star-inspired dial design directly references the satellites that enable the Astron’s GPS functionality, while the black-coated titanium construction adds a contemporary and technical character.

By pairing proven GPS Solar movements with a distinctive new dial treatment, these limited editions offer a fresh aesthetic variation within the Astron lineup without altering the core technology that has made the collection a benchmark for satellite-controlled watches.
