Seiko’s dedication to traditional Japanese craftsmanship continues with a striking new addition to its Presage Classic Series: the SPB497, a limited-edition timepiece showcasing an unglazed Arita porcelain dial. This release reaffirms Seiko’s reputation for bringing heritage techniques into modern watchmaking with exceptional finesse.
Refined Case Proportions and Practical Build
The SPB497 is housed in a stainless steel case with a balanced diameter of 40.60 mm and a thickness of 12.40 mm, designed to wear comfortably on a range of wrist sizes. The mix of brushed and polished surfaces adds sophistication, while the dual-curved sapphire crystal ensures clarity and durability. A screw-down display caseback offers a view of the mechanical movement within, and 100 meters of water resistance adds a practical edge to this elegant dress watch.
Unglazed Arita Porcelain: A Dial with Soul
What distinguishes this model is its unglazed Arita porcelain dial, a first in the Presage lineup. Unlike its glazed predecessors, this dial features a matte, powdery texture that reveals the organic character of the porcelain material. Its soft cream hue serves as an understated canvas for the golden accents that follow.
A delicate rhombus pattern, subtly etched into the porcelain around the outer edge, adds dimension and carries historical symbolism—often associated with prosperity and well-being in Japanese culture. The time display includes gold-toned leaf-shaped hour and minute hands, a crescent counterweight on the seconds hand, and applied gold baton indices that provide visual warmth and contrast against the soft dial surface.
Movement: Reliable Performance from Within
Powering the SPB497 is the In-house Seiko Caliber 6R51, an automatic movement known for its reliability and long autonomy. Operating at 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hz), it offers a 72-hour power reserve, making it practical for daily wear or weekend rotation. Though the finishing is utilitarian, the gold-colored rotor echoes the gold elements on the dial, creating a visual continuity from front to back.
Strap and Availability
The watch is paired with a black leather strap, fitted with a three-fold clasp and push-button release for secure and easy wear. As a limited edition of 1,200 pieces, the SPB497 will be available starting July 2025 at Seiko Boutiques and select authorized retailers worldwide. It is priced at € 1,950.
