Seiko Goes Purple For Tokyo 2025 With The New Speedtimer SSC955
In honor of the upcoming World Athletics Championships Tokyo 2025, Seiko unveils a new addition to its Speedtimer Solar Chronograph lineup. The Seiko Prospex SSC955 combines precision chronograph functionality, solar-powered technology, and a distinctive design that draws from Japanese cultural heritage, all within a compact, sport-ready form factor.

Commemorating Tokyo 2025 with Edo-Inspired Design
This special edition timepiece marks the occasion of the World Athletics Championships, scheduled to take place in Tokyo from September 13–21, 2025. The dial’s soft purple hue is directly inspired by Edo purple, a traditional color historically associated with the city during the Edo period. This refined color choice also serves as the official shade of the upcoming event.
Case and Build
The watch features a 39 mm stainless steel case with a thickness of 13.30 mm and a lug-to-lug distance of 45.50 mm, offering a versatile and balanced profile suited for everyday wear. The case incorporates a blend of circular brushing on the top surfaces and polished flanks, enhancing its dynamic appearance.

A fixed black hard-coated bezel surrounds the dial, engraved with a white tachymeter scale for tracking speed based on travel time. The chronograph pushers and crown are neatly integrated on the right side of the case, ensuring ease of use and symmetry in design.
With a water resistance rating of 100 meters, the SSC955 is well equipped for both daily use and more active settings.
Dial and Hands
The dial serves as the central design highlight of the watch. The light purple color, unique to this edition, is matched with faceted black hour markers, while Lumibrite is applied to the cardinal positions for improved legibility in low-light conditions. The matte black sword-style hands feature white Lumibrite inserts, creating a clean and legible display against the dial’s gentle tone.

The three sub-dials have a slightly deeper hue and sit at the 3, 6, and 9 o’clock positions. These registers house the solar panels while also serving key functions: the 9 o’clock sub-dial shows the running seconds, the 3 o’clock sub-dial functions as a 24-hour AM/PM indicator, and the 6 o’clock sub-dial tracks elapsed time up to 60 minutes for chronograph use. Additionally, the 6 o’clock sub-dial doubles as a power reserve indicator, with markings from “E” (empty) to “F” (full). A date window is positioned between 4 and 5 o’clock and features a white background with black numerals for easy reading.
Movement and Power
Powering the SSC955 is Seiko’s Caliber V192, a solar-powered quartz movement capable of charging via any light source. On a full charge, it delivers a power reserve of up to six months. The movement maintains an accuracy of ±15 seconds per month. One practical feature of this movement is its low power indicator, in which the seconds hand moves in two-second intervals when a recharge is needed. With its solar technology, the watch requires no battery changes, offering convenience and environmental efficiency.

Bracelet and Wearability
The watch is paired with a three-link stainless steel bracelet, featuring polished center links flanked by brushed outer links. This mix of finishes adds subtle contrast and a sporty elegance. The bracelet is secured by a deployant clasp for added convenience and security on the wrist.
Caseback and Limited Edition
Turning the watch over reveals a solid caseback engraved with the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 emblem, as well as the individual limited edition number out of 6,000 total pieces.
