At the end of last year, we saw the rebirth of the Laurel, the first Japanese wristwatch that in 1913 was launched under the “hands” of Seikosha, the same one that 11 years later would give rise to the birth of the Seiko brand.
Today the most important Japanese watchmaking brand, which next year celebrates its first century of life, decides to mark this historic milestone with the launch of a 1000-piece limited edition reissue of the Laurel model that now arrives in a 35mm case faithful to the original and with the Seiko brand displayed on the dial in the place previously occupied by the name Laurel.
The watch thus comes dressed in a round stainless steel case in the style of pocket watches, 35mm in diameter by 12.30mm thick and whose height is partly due to its now boxed sapphire crystal. Hinged lugs attached to a Bund-like leather strap, fluted crown at 3 o’clock engraved with Seikosha’s ‘S’, which we will also find engraved on the solid rear case.
The enamel glossy white dial comes with the original layout displaying black Breguet numerals, and three central hands in petrol blue, which means that the previous small-seconds now give way to a centre seconds and that in its place now stands a 24-hour indicator, and finally the obvious Seiko lettering written in a vintage at noon.
At its heart beats the modern Caliber 6R5H that gives life to the watch, operating at the low frequency of 3Hz and offering a robust 3 days of power reserve.
The new Seiko Presage SPB441 arrives in January 2024, just in time for its 100th anniversary, priced at €2,000 and can be found in the brand’s official boutiques and retail partners.
