The SPB493J introduces an inverted color scheme compared to its predecessors. Instead of the signature green dial, this new model features a textured black dial with overlapping grooves, inspired by the wing feathers of hornbills, tropical birds native to Southeast Asia. Complementing this bold aesthetic is a green inner compass bezel, preserving the Alpinist’s signature identity.

Key design highlights include gilt Arabic numerals at the cardinal points (3, 6, 9, and 12 o’clock) and triangular hour markers on the remaining positions, replacing the previous Arabic numerals interspersed with triangular indexes layout, cathedral-shaped hands filled with Lumibrite for enhanced legibility and a round date window at 4:30 with a black background for seamless integration. Rotating green inner compass bezel with lumed dots, an orange GMT hand with a luminous tip, coordinating with the GMT lettering at 6 o’clock, and the Prospex “X” branding at 12 o’clock, reinforcing its adventure-ready nature.

For those outside the Asian market, Seiko offers a silver lining: the Seiko Alpinist GMT SBEJ005. Previously exclusive to Japan, this model is now available worldwide. While similar to the SPB377 and SPB379, the SBEJ005 features the classic emerald green dial reminiscent of the SARB017, aligning it with Seiko’s heritage.

Unlike the limited SPB493J, the SBEJ005 joins Seiko’s permanent collection at a more affordable price of USD 1,150, making it an excellent alternative for enthusiasts worldwide.
