Seiko 5 Sports 55th Anniversary Introduces 4 New Watches
Seiko continues to celebrate the 55th anniversary of its historic model 5 Sports and a few weeks ago we saw the arrival of two fun limited editions as a result of the partnership with Peanuts, now there are four new models, also celebrations, and one of them very special.
Although the Seiko 5 Sports collection has been made up of different models over the years, since its reintroduction in 2019, most of the public associates it with the iconic and late SKX model, since many models have been reintroduced since then with the inspiration of the SKX-style case. However, when in 1968 Seiko made known to the world the first 5 Sports model, a success story that extends to the present day, the model in question was the 6106-8120 and contrary to what many might think it did not come in the SKX form but with the so-called C-case style, a retro case with hidden lugs and which even gave rise to many other Seiko models known as the Seiko Pongue introduced three years later.
Thus, the new Seiko 5 Sports SRPK17 now appears as an almost faithful recreation of the original from 1968, featuring the same shape case on the outside with dimensions of 39.5mm in diameter and 12.5mm in thickness, rotating bezel with a 60-minute scale with a round pip light at 12 o’clock, hardlex glass, crown at 4 o’clock, screwed case back and 100m water resistance.
And if on the outside the new Seiko 5 Sports looks more like a clone of the original on the dial history repeats itself, with the black background matching the tone of the bezel, a silver railroad minute track where applied hour indexes and faceted hands all filled with Lumibrite, a centre red lollipop seconds hand, a framed day-date window at 3 o’clock, four lines of text at 6 o’clock headed by the inscription “Sports” in blue in the same font as the original and for last we leave the best part that will make the delight of the brand’s many fans, the original Seiko 5 Sports logo at 12 o’clock, which also covers the red box where it is offered.
The new SRPK17 is attached to a vintage-inspired tapered steel bracelet made up of unique horizontal links.
It is a limited edition of 15,555 units available from September 2023 worldwide and can be purchased for €410.
In addition to the new SRPK17, there are three more entries to be registered, as announced above, which do come with the classic SKX-style steel case of 42.5mm in diameter by 13.4mm thick, unidirectional bezel with a round pip light at 12 o’clock, hardlex glass, crown at 4 o’clock with crown guards, open case Back and 100m water resistance.
Among the new references is the SRPK09 which comes with a sunburst silver dial and a silver-black bezel just like the Seiko 5 Sports inspired by the former “Time Sonar” introduced last year, the SRPK11 which comes with an orange dial with a central band black and an orange-black chapter ring and lastly we have the SRPK13 with a black dial, chapter ring and coloured green-blue and white-red bezel with a regatta-style scale.
These three references also share on the dial applied hour markers and faceted hands all filled with Lumibrite, an orange centre seconds hand, a framed day-date window at 3 o’clock, the contemporary Seiko 5 Sports logo at 12 o’clock and the inscription “Automatic” in blue at 6 o’clock.
They all come attached to a three-link steel bracelet and they are all in regular production and can be had for a price of €350
Finally, it should be noted that the four watches share the same internal automatic movement, the Caliber 4R36, which operates at 21,600 Vph and offers up to 41 hours of power reserve.
