Roger Dubuis Excalibur The Metamorph Merlin: The Knights’ Final Chapter
Roger Dubuis brings its Knights of the Round Table saga to another chapter with the Excalibur Knights of the Round Table The Metamorph Merlin, the third and final creation in the series dedicated to Merlin. Limited to just 28 pieces, the new timepiece combines sculptural watchmaking, precious metals and an elaborate multi-layered dial inspired by the legendary wizard’s ability to transform himself.
As with previous Knights of the Round Table creations, the watch is designed less as a conventional timepiece and more as a miniature scene. The dial places twelve sculpted knights around its perimeter, while the architectural structure beneath them creates depth and gives the central display a striking three-dimensional appearance.
A Green Interpretation of the Giant’s Causeway
One of the defining elements of The Metamorph Merlin is its dial architecture. The surface is constructed from numerous hexagonal columns, drawing inspiration from the distinctive basalt formations of the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland.
For this third Merlin edition, Roger Dubuis introduces a deep green palette. It follows the black columns of the 2024 Omniscient Merlin and the white architecture of the 2025 Enchanter Merlin, giving each watch in the trilogy its own visual identity.

The green tones are intended to evoke the forests and natural landscapes associated with Merlin and the Arthurian legends, while also providing a dramatic backdrop for the sculptures.
The columns combine four different materials: polished glass treated with CVD coating, transparent glass, Crystalium and pink gold. Their different surfaces and levels of transparency create variations in light across the dial, while the layered construction adds considerable visual depth.
At the centre, pink-gold hour and minute hands provide the essential time indication without competing with the elaborate architecture surrounding them.
Twelve Knights Around the Dial
The twelve hour positions are represented by individually sculpted knights in pink gold. Each figure has its own pose, with the sculptures depicted in positions ranging from kneeling and standing guard to preparing for battle.

The level of detail in these miniature figures is central to the character of the collection. Rather than simply serving as decorative hour markers, they become part of the architectural composition of the dial.
The result is a dial that needs to be viewed from different angles. The combination of the knights, columns and transparent elements produces a constantly changing interplay between light, shadow and reflections.
A 45mm Pink-Gold Excalibur Case
The elaborate dial is housed in a 45 mm pink-gold case, maintaining the substantial proportions associated with the Excalibur collection.
For the first time in the Knights of the Round Table collection, Roger Dubuis extends the storytelling beyond the dial with engraved scenes on the caseband and the sides of the lugs.

On the left side of the case, several engraved knights reproduce poses inspired by the figures found on the dial. On the right, around the crown, the decoration depicts Merlin alongside a white stag, referencing one of the forms attributed to the legendary wizard.
A sapphire element positioned above the caseband allows additional views into the sculptural construction of the dial. It is topped by a pink-gold bezel, completing the layered architecture of the case.
Calibre RD821
Behind the theatrical exterior is the automatic Roger Dubuis calibre RD821.
The movement operates at a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour) and provides approximately 48 hours of power reserve. More than the headline specifications, however, the RD821 is distinguished by its elaborate architecture and finishing.

Visible through the sapphire crystal caseback, the movement features a complex, open construction with twisting bridges and extensive hand finishing. The attention given to its decoration contributes to the watch’s status as a Geneva-sealed creation.
The Poinçon de Genève certification reflects requirements covering both the construction and finishing of the movement, adding another layer of traditional Geneva watchmaking to an otherwise highly contemporary and theatrical timepiece.
The caseback also carries an inscription dedicated to the responsibility and duty associated with the Knights of the Round Table.
The Final Merlin
With The Metamorph Merlin, Roger Dubuis completes its three-watch exploration of Merlin within the Knights of the Round Table collection.

The combination of the green multi-layered architecture, miniature pink-gold knights, engraved case and elaborately finished RD821 movement makes this considerably more than a conventional time-only watch. It brings together sculpture, mechanical watchmaking and storytelling within the architecture of the Excalibur case.
Limited to 28 pieces, the Roger Dubuis Excalibur Knights of the Round Table The Metamorph Merlin is available on request.
Our Take
We have always found the Knights of the Round Table collection fascinating because Roger Dubuis doesn’t try to make these watches conventional. The Metamorph Merlin takes that philosophy even further, using the entire watch as a canvas for sculpture and architecture.
For us, the green dial is particularly effective. The combination of the hexagonal structures, transparent elements and pink-gold figures creates considerable depth, while the engraved case adds details that only reveal themselves when the watch is examined more closely.
It is undoubtedly an extravagant watch, and that is precisely the point. The Metamorph Merlin is not trying to be discreet or versatile; it is an exercise in high-end mechanical craftsmanship and miniature sculpture, bringing the Merlin trilogy to its conclusion with a design that feels appropriately theatrical.
