Ressence Unveils Type 8 Daniel Engelberg Art Watches
Ressence, the independent watchmaker renowned for its orbital time displays and sleek aesthetics, unveils the latest addition to its Art Watches series—two new limited editions of the Type 8, featuring dials designed in collaboration with German sculptor and painter Daniel Engelberg.
The base of this artistic evolution is the Ressence Type 8, the brand’s most distilled expression of its design philosophy. With no traditional hands and no crown, the Type 8 features a unique orbital time display where the entire dial rotates to indicate the minutes, while a satellite sub-dial displays the hours. This system is powered by the ROCS 8 (Ressence Orbital Convex System), a patented mechanical module mounted atop a reliable automatic ETA calibre. The ROCS is driven directly by the minute axle of the base movement and transmits motion through an intricate system of gears and ball bearings.
For this release, Engelberg’s signature style—concentric circles radiating from a dark center—is directly applied to the titanium dial. Each dial is engraved with a sculptural motif, then hand-painted in layers of gradient acrylics, resulting in a dynamic visual effect reminiscent of motion or depth. The dials are sealed with a high-gloss finish that enhances contrast and dimensionality.
Two versions of the Type 8 Daniel Engelberg Art Watch are available. The first, referred to as DE1, features a bold composition of pink and fuchsia gradients paired with a matching rubber strap. The second version, DE2, offers a cooler spectrum of turquoise and blue-green tones, complemented by a rubber strap in a similar hue. Both editions maintain the original 42.90 mm diameter and 11mm thickness of the Type 8. The case is constructed from grade 5 titanium and covered by a domed sapphire crystal. Thanks to its lug-less and crown-free design, the watch offers an ergonomic fit even on smaller wrists.
All settings, including time adjustment and winding, are performed via the caseback mechanism, which rotates in both directions. While the water resistance is rated at 10 metres, the Type 8 is clearly intended for refined daily use rather than underwater activity.
Only 40 pieces of each version will be produced, underscoring the exclusivity of this artistic collaboration. Each watch is delivered with a complementary blue leather strap in addition to the rubber strap.
