The Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres (COSC) has introduced a new performance tier within its certification framework: the Excellence Chronometer. Rather than replacing the well-established chronometer standard, this new designation raises the bar for movements that demonstrate superior precision, magnetic resistance, and power reserve reliability.
For watch brands and collectors alike, the new standard brings greater clarity to what “high precision” truly means in today’s technological landscape.
A Higher Benchmark for Mechanical Performance
The traditional COSC chronometer certification requires a movement to maintain an average daily rate between –4 and +6 seconds per day. Under the new Excellence Chronometer standard, that tolerance has been reduced to a more demanding range of –2 to +4 seconds per day.
By shrinking the total allowable variation from ten seconds to six seconds, the new benchmark reflects improvements in escapement geometry, balance stability, silicon components, and manufacturing precision. The result is a movement that delivers more consistent timekeeping performance across different positions and conditions.
Enhanced Magnetic Resistance: 200 Gauss Minimum
Magnetism is one of the most common real-world threats to mechanical accuracy. Everyday devices such as smartphones, tablets, speakers, and handbags with magnetic clasps expose watches to low-level magnetic fields on a regular basis.
To address this, the Excellence Chronometer standard introduces a mandatory minimum resistance of 200 Gauss.
While this does not place it in the category of extreme anti-magnetic tool watches, it provides a meaningful level of protection against common environmental exposure — helping preserve amplitude stability and rate precision in daily use.
Verified Power Reserve Accuracy
Power reserve figures are a key specification for collectors, especially as many contemporary movements now exceed 70 or even 100 hours of autonomy.
With the Excellence Chronometer certification, COSC will now verify that the actual power reserve matches the value declared by the brand.
This adds measurable accountability. Instead of approximate or theoretical values, the reserve duration must correspond to real-world performance under controlled testing conditions.
For owners, this ensures that the stated autonomy — whether 60, 72, or 120 hours — delivers exactly what is promised.
Continued Evolution of Water-Resistance Testing
Alongside the new chronometric tier, COSC is also working to modernize aspects of its testing infrastructure. One area under refinement is water-resistance validation, with an aim to better simulate real-world underwater conditions rather than relying solely on static pressure testing.
Although this update is not exclusive to the Excellence Chronometer category, it reflects a broader effort to align certification procedures with practical usage scenarios.
Implementation Timeline
The implementation of the Excellence Chronometer certification follows a structured timeline. COSC is currently integrating the necessary testing technologies within its laboratories. Pilot testing is scheduled to begin in March to validate procedures, followed by a public presentation of the new standard in Geneva during major watch industry events in April. Full operational deployment is planned for October, at which point watches meeting the enhanced criteria will begin appearing in boutiques bearing the Excellence Chronometer designation.

The introduction of the Excellence Chronometer label recognizes that not all chronometers perform at the same level. As movement architecture and materials evolve, a single certification tier no longer reflects the full spectrum of achievable performance.
