Raymond Weil Unvails The New ‘Square’ Freelancer
Raymond Weil turns the page on his Freelancer collection. Born in 2007, the Freelancer collection has undergone different iterations over the years, embracing different complications and styles, among more than four dozen models, but to this day all of them share the same round case shape.
And today, sixteen later, the new Raymond Weil Freelancer is built under the reference 2790, which breaks previous standards and now embraces a square cushion-shaped case, in the style of the 70s.
The new square steel case comes with dimensions of 40mm by 40mm and 10.50mm in thickness, round bevels and a polished finish. Smooth bezel, sapphire glass with a double AR coating, fluted screw-down crown with brand’s logo carved, open case-back and 100m of water resistance.
The green or blue dial features a gradient effect whose tones intensify from the centre to the periphery. Built in four layers, on the central disc we find a grained background, followed by two floors where silver-plated hour markers sit and which, like the central hour and minute hands, are filled with Super-LumiNova, and also an open Balance Wheel with a horizontal bridge that houses a running second at 6 o’clock. Finally, a minute chapter ring is painted in white.
Inside runs the automatic movement manufactured RW1212 from 2017 developed in partnership with Sellita, with the Incabloc shock protection system and Etachron regulator. Reaching 28,800 Bph and offering up to 38 hours of power reserve.
The new watch is offered with two strap options, namely the Jubille-type steel bracelet or a calf leather strap matching the dial tone, with prices varying between €2,575 and €2,525 for each option respectively.
A quick note for the reduced size with the reference 2490 which comes in five variants in the same green and blue tones, here embracing a steel case measuring 34.50mm by 34.50mm and a thickness of 9.30mm, with options of smooth or a 60-diamond set bezel, on the dial the open Balance wheel gives way to a date window at 6 o’clock that translates into the RW4200 automatic movement.
