Piaget Polo Minute Repeater: The Art Of Making Time Heard

Piaget brings one of traditional watchmaking’s most demanding complications to its contemporary Polo collection with the new Piaget Polo Minute Repeater. Combining an ultra-thin automatic movement, hand-finished decoration and a sophisticated chiming mechanism, the new model adds a highly technical dimension to the Maison’s sport-chic aesthetic.

At the heart of the watch is the Manufacture Calibre 1290P, an ultra-thin self-winding minute repeater developed, finished and assembled at Piaget’s Manufacture in La Côte-aux-Fées. The movement continues the brand’s long-standing expertise in reducing the dimensions of mechanical calibres while incorporating complex complications.

A 48mm White Gold Case

The Polo Minute Repeater is housed in a substantial 48 mm white gold case, measuring just 9.30 mm thick. Finished in rhodium, the case follows the distinctive rounded-cushion architecture associated with Piaget’s larger complicated watches, while incorporating the visual language of the Polo collection.

Despite its generous diameter, the relatively restrained thickness is particularly significant given the complexity of the mechanism inside. The case is water-resistant to 30 metres.

The minute repeater is activated through a slide positioned at 9 o’clock. Sliding the control engages the chiming mechanism, which acoustically indicates the current time through a sequence of sounds.

An Openworked and Guilloché Dial

Piaget gives the dial a strong technical and decorative character. Constructed from white gold, it combines openworking with hand-executed guilloché, complemented by blue PVD details.

A blue sapphire ring provides another distinctive element, adding depth to the dial while creating a visual frame around parts of the exposed movement. At approximately 4 o’clock, the sapphire element carries the inscription “La Côte-aux-Fées”, paying tribute to the location of Piaget’s Manufacture.

Through the openworked sections, the wearer can see elements of the minute repeater mechanism, including its dedicated inertia-wheel regulator. This component plays an important role in controlling the speed at which the repeater strikes the hours and minutes.

The Ultra-Thin Calibre 1290P

The technical centrepiece is Piaget’s Calibre 1290P, an automatic minute repeater movement comprising 430 components.

The movement uses a platinum micro-rotor, allowing automatic winding to be integrated without requiring a conventional full-size rotor that would add considerably to the movement’s thickness. This architecture is particularly appropriate for a watch that combines self-winding functionality with a sophisticated striking mechanism.

Piaget completes the calibre using a combination of traditional decorative techniques. The bridges are hand-bevelled, while the mainplate features guilloché decoration. The repeater hammers receive a mirror-polished finish, ensuring that components normally hidden beneath the dial are treated with the same attention as the visible surfaces.

A Carefully Tuned Sound

A minute repeater is not simply a mechanical complication; its effectiveness depends heavily on the acoustic behaviour of the movement and case.

For the Calibre 1290P, Piaget has undertaken extensive acoustic development and quotes a sound intensity of 64 decibels. The mechanism strikes the hours using a G-sharp note, followed by the minutes in A-sharp, creating the characteristic sequence that allows the wearer to determine the time without looking at the dial.

The visible inertia wheel provides an indication of the complexity involved in controlling this sequence, as the regulator governs the rhythm of the chiming mechanism.

A High Jewellery Interpretation

Piaget is also introducing a more elaborate High Jewellery version of the Polo Minute Repeater. In this configuration, the bezel is set with baguette-cut blue sapphires, while the case combines baguette-cut and brilliant-cut diamonds.

The dial is fully openworked, placing the Calibre 1290P and its decorative finishing at the centre of the design. The result puts considerably more emphasis on the relationship between haute horlogerie and Piaget’s jewellery expertise.

Limited Production

The standard Piaget Polo Minute Repeater is fitted with an embossed blue calfskin strap, while an additional alligator strap is supplied. Production is limited, with five numbered pieces planned for this year.
