With the Tonda PF Chronograph Mystérieux, Parmigiani Fleurier continues to push the boundaries of discreet complications. Building on the brand’s exploration of “hidden” functions, this model introduces a newly developed in-house chronograph concept that combines mechanical sophistication with a minimalist display.

Case and Design

The watch is housed in a 40 mm stainless steel case with a thickness of 13 mm, featuring a mix of polished and satin-brushed finishes that emphasize its refined character. A signature element of the Tonda PF collection, the knurled bezel is crafted from platinum, offering a subtle yet luxurious contrast to the steel case.

The dial comes in the brand’s elegant “Mineral Blue” shade and is decorated with a hand-guilloché Grain d’Orge pattern. This traditional finishing technique enhances the play of light across the surface while maintaining the understated and balanced aesthetic that defines the collection.

An Unconventional Monopusher Layout

A notable technical detail is the positioning of the chronograph control. Instead of traditional pushers placed on the case side, all chronograph functions—start, stop, and reset—are operated through a single monopusher integrated into the case at 7 o’clock. This unusual configuration is directly linked to the architecture of the new movement and allows for a cleaner, more streamlined case profile.

The PF053 Manufacture Movement

Powering the watch is the in-house PF053 automatic chronograph movement. It is built around a column wheel construction and operates at a frequency of 4 Hz, equivalent to 28,800 vibrations per hour, ensuring precise timekeeping. The movement consists of 362 individual components and delivers a power reserve of approximately 60 hours, making it suitable for regular use without frequent winding.

Despite its complexity, the caliber features automatic winding, enhancing everyday practicality. The finishing reflects Parmigiani Fleurier’s high standards, with open-worked bridges, satin-brushed surfaces, and meticulously hand-beveled edges visible through the caseback.

A “Mystérieux” Chronograph Display

The defining feature of the Chronograph Mystérieux is its innovative approach to displaying elapsed time.

In its standard configuration, the watch behaves like a classic time-only model. The rhodium-plated hands indicate hours and minutes, while the central seconds hand tracks civil time in a traditional manner.

Once the chronograph is activated, the display undergoes a transformation. The central seconds hand instantly resets to zero and begins measuring elapsed seconds. At the same time, the rhodium-plated hour and minute hands reposition themselves to function as chronograph counters, tracking elapsed time.

Simultaneously, a second set of rose gold hour and minute hands appears from beneath. These hidden hands continue to display the current time while the chronograph is running, ensuring that the wearer does not lose track of civil time.

When the chronograph is stopped and reset, all hands return to their original roles. The rhodium-plated hands resume their standard timekeeping function, and the rose gold hands disappear once again beneath them, restoring the dial’s clean and minimal appearance.

A Different Approach to Chronograph Design

Rather than relying on sub-dials or additional counters, Parmigiani Fleurier has developed a system in which the hands themselves change function. This approach preserves dial purity while introducing a layer of mechanical ingenuity rarely seen in traditional chronograph design.

The Tonda PF Chronograph Mystérieux is priced at approximately CHF 36,900, placing it firmly within the high-end segment of luxury watches featuring integrated designs and in-house chronograph movements.
